Session 2: In Which the Party Meets a Dragon

General Summary

Deep within the newly shattered earth the party had taken a moment to breathe and regroup. Trent, Blu, Bud and Rath were recovering from their encounter with large fire beetles and decided to study the strange orb and amulet that Bud looted from a chest while his companions fought for their lives. Also they looked in marvel at the fire glands that stayed behind after the beetles bodies had implausibly disappeared. With a little investigation Bud had determined that the orb could tell the holder which direction they were facing and the amulet (which we now would call "clockwork" amulet; Bud was commonly giving new names to things he could not explain) would allow him to achieve mediocrity once a day.   Trent used his superior knowledge of how nature works to bind the wounds of the intrepid heroes and they trudged on into the unknown. Spelunking deep into the crevice of the now gaping hole in the ground, the four fantastic fellows (and Dingus) came across a tall cavern where Bud and Blu quickly identified a large swarm of bats, each almost a meter across their black wings. Bud attempted to warn the others, but Rath, having been deep in thought with regards to his naval lint, yelled out "Where?!!?" which set forth a horrific blob of winged mammalians on a mission to kill. With weapons drawn and minds full of terror, the fantastic four fought with all their might and slew the entire swarm of monstrous bats. Dingus was there too. A chest was spotted and Rath quickly descended upon the chest and opened it up. Within was a prize held above all others; a Cloak of Imagination. Rath donned the mythical, magical mantle and immediate it began changing colors with his every thought.   Content with their recent victory and overjoyed with the new potent item in their possession, the four (+1) ventured further into the cave. Trent yet again stopped the bleeding of his friends. When entering into the next section of the cave the group noticed two dog-sized spiders and an ooze-thing. Unlike previous encounters the group had gained the drop upon the enemy. Bud led the charge into the fray with Rath going back-to-back to prevent one of the other creatures from gaining an advantage. Blu joined the group and formed the Triangle of Trouble briefly. The ooze-thing separate into two and began attacking the heroes. Rath and Blu both fell during the fight but due to the quick thinking of Trent both were quickly revived to return to the fight. In the end the creatures were defeated.   Another chest was found and Blu was excited as he threw the lid open. He was sadly disappointed as instead of a massive weapon or a pet dragon there was a polished piece of agate. Trent, however, saw something special in the rock and decided to pick it up. As he was turning it over in his hands it came to him; this is his lucky rock.   While Trent looked at his new lucky rock, Bud walked around looking at a wall that seemed out of place. He waved his hand and writing lit up across a semi-flat part of the wall. It said:   "What has roots as nobody sees, Is taller than trees, Up, up it goes, And yet never grows?"   After only a quick second Bud muttered "A mountain". The wall opened and revealed a chamber with two floating crystalline creatures guarding two chests. Rath was overtaken by his (overly) curious nature and went up to touch the elemental. A quick flash of power and the elemental sent shards of rock deep into the flesh of Rath's shoulder. The group ran forth to assist their grievously wounded friend. After a vicious battle with the two elementals the group emerged victorious, each of the four being seriously injured (except Dingus, who urinated his pants). The two chests were opened and the contents were truly astounding. Bud found a sentient rock, being small in stature but strong in capability. The rock (named "Mountain" or "Pebbles") seemed magically drawn to Bud, which had a level of irony due to his role as the Earth Wyrm Lord in the play just a few hours before. Blu grabbed the other chest and found a potion which would shrink him in stature for a period of time.   The fantastic four (+1) found no other way out, so they returned to the beginning of the cave and went down the path untaken. There was just a simple room with a crack in the wall. The crack was sizable, able to fit a tiny animal or maybe Pebbles. After tossing a fire beetle gland inside the crack to see what was there, Blu valiantly offered to ingest the potion he recently found and venture forth into the unknown. He drank the draught and immediately shrank to a point where he could fit into the crack. He began his quiet infiltration.   Resting in the room for a minute Rath and Trent began having a conversation about their current situation. The idea was put forth that everything they were experiencing in this cave seemed conveniently planned. Trent began explaining his dreams, which he is wont to do, and how this seemed in line with what he had seen in his dreamscapes. Rath postulated that this was not just planned, but a set up to test the four friends. The creatures which seemed to mindlessly attack whatever came near, the fact that their bodies disappeared, the random treasures that were strewn about a large cave, the fact that some treasures are conveniently exactly what the party needed to overcome their next hurdle...all of this seemed engineered. Rath took it one step further and asserted that they were chosen for this test.   While the group was discussing their hypothesis Blu went into the crack. Once inside he rolled the fire beetle gland around until he found what appeared to be a button on the ground and a door with a dragon carved into the rock around it. After some positive reinforcement by his team, he stepped on the button. The door opened and they entered the largest room they had ever seen. There, in the great gem-encrusted hall, was a dragon. The team decided (with 3 of 4 agreeing) to continue the play where they had left off to appease the dragon, who lay there sleeping. As soon as they began the dragon awoke. Bud was selected to speak to the dragon and he began asking questions. Dingus (who had done nothing productive thus far) asked for a diamond that was perched below the rear haunches of the dragon. After some discussion, disbelief and astonishment the dragon charged the group to find one gem each further into the cave. The dragon outreached a claw and a new door opened. Dingus decided to stay behind while the four friends ventured forth into the unknown at the behest of a dragon.
