Character: Eleth

Maraleth Eleth Allan (a.k.a. Leatherback)

"A single stretch of egg-white linen formed a light tunic which weaved around Eleth’s resting form, with the excess draped between her legs. The linen was her lifeline, and the length, a testament to her achievements. Like the soldiers of the AATF wore their battle scars, she wore the timor like a trophy, proudly boasting its scant coverage to anyone who dared lower their attention to her waistline. It was just one of a thousand stumbling blocks that only half of her wished to overcome."   Excerpt from Zerth

Personal history

Eleth was the second born of twins into a military family in Aerie Tower. At a young age, she had formed a strong bond with her twin brother, and together, the two would spend hours at a time tinkering with their father's hyperbike.   All was bright with sunbeams dancing across a tiled floor. Decorative felt foliage lined the walls, mixed with colorful wax drawings and books stacked clumsily in the corners of her childhood bedroom. She sat with her back against a double-layered bed. The heat of the tiles pressed against her bare legs as she fished through a jumbled mess of figurines and building blocks, spread across the floor. Her brother’s hand rummaged through the pile and snatched up the miniature hyperbike, dragging it along the grouting between tiles, skillfully dodging cracks and leaping over a rubber ball, spinning it around in the air between his fingers. “That’s a 360° spin. It’s what the best pilots do!”   “I can do that,” Eleth cried, snatching the toy from her brother’s hand.   “Prove it!” her brother said.   Little Eleth scurried to stand and took off running out the door, spinning the toy in her fingers. She could feel the pounding of her brother’s bare feet close behind and the deep laughter of his voice in her ears. The hall went dark. She turned to see his face, buried in schematics and blueprints among the wafting steam of blue tea – the two of them lit in the glow of a single work-lamp. They sat opposite each other, stranded in conversation.   “If we were to match the drive-fan RPM to the rear fans, we could double the acceleration.”   “…but what about the balance issue? How many stabilizer-servos are you gonna put on this thing?”   “As many as it takes.”   “It’s gonna be covered in stabilizer-servos,” Eleth smiled. Her brother smirked at the blueprint and the two of them burst into laughter as he grabbed the eraser and put it to work across the paper. She kept laughing as tears streamed backward across her face. The wind tunnel clamored to a halt. Eleth wiped her eyes and hobbled off the rigged-up bike, shaking her head and forcing a defeated smile.   “It’s okay, Ellie,” he said, “nothing comes easy.”   “If it ever comes at all,” she said.   “Always so dower, El. Look at me, I’m failing and still having the time of my life. That’s what you need to learn. Sometimes the process is reward enough.”   “That’s why you never finish anything,” she said. “You take too much pleasure in failure. Without me you would still be playing with toys, dreaming of a day you could get off your lazy butt and do something about it.”   Her brother’s laughter faded and she turned her attention away. There, at the back of the cantina, that girl has her brother again. Eleth plowed through the crowd, nearly bowling over a mother and child as they sat sipping on ginger-tea. She slapped her palms on the table and her brother spit up some coffee. “Jesus El, what’s your problem?”   “You had a meeting with the head of the engineering department at 17:00. That was twenty minutes ago!” She said.   “Look! I’m just showing Avalia what we came up with. The engineering department can wait. It’s not every day I get to see her.”   Eleth turned to see the indignant face of her brother’s interest – lowered and scowling with too much lipstick and an ill-fitted push-up bra. The damned succubus.   “And how often do you get to meet with the head of engineering?” Eleth said. “This is your one chance! I worked my ass off to get you this meeting and this is what you do with it?! You say goodbye to your little tramp and get your scrawny ass to that meeting, NOW!” She grabbed her brother by the wrist and yanked him across the table. “I am not letting you fuck this up!”   Eleth turned to find her hands empty. She searched through the darkness with a restless beating in her chest. There, her brother kneeling down before the succubus, promising anything for love. He turned to Eleth with a smile she had never seen before. “Don’t worry, Ellie, the AATF only needs me for four years. Afterwards, I will come back. I promise.”   “The AATF doesn’t need you at all, dumbass.”   “I know… but Avalia does – and if we want to marry, I have to have full rights of citizenship. The AATF is the only way.”   “But what about your work? Our work? The plans, the engineering-”   “It can wait, El. I have a life to live.”   “But I thought this was your life.”   “No, Avalia is my life. My work is just… what I enjoy doing.”   Eleth’s heart beat cold. The succubus was in her wedding dress and her brother in his uniform – their arms locked with all hope fluttering away. A rage built inside her as the two figures stood, brandishing that same unfamiliar smile.   Eleth turned away in disgust to find his casket sitting on a podium. He was gone. Her other half wiped away. It was a weak ceremony with only the immediate family paying their respects, and no one there to say a damned thing about what he truly loved. A tragedy in itself, so much potential ripped clean from history without so much as a whimper of what could have been. Just one of six burials to take place in the service. They never found his body, so the casket was filled with the things he loved most – a photograph of the succubus and his rifle.   After the disappearance of her brother, Eleth became deeply engaged in Lord Ekiel's Maraleth Guard. There, she studded to shape her body into a weapon.
