Grell Woods

The Grell Woods is a dense deciduous forest covering most of Northern Gathorem. It is the largest continuously forested area within Zelkanea, stretching across over 15.7 million hectares of land.

Geography

The region encapsulated by the forest is overrun with large hills and trenches. Paths, carved by frequent use, weave through the woods, though when left unattended for a year or more, the forest rapidly reclaims them. Narrow rivers, ponds, and small lakes litter the forest, numerous orc camps usually along their edge or nearby. The largest river within the Grell Woods is the Thraag River, flowing between the western coast and Skarlak Bay. Swamp-land areas are also spot the Grell Woods, some stretching for several kilometers.

Fauna & Flora

The woods are primarily comprised of deciduous trees such as hickory, oak, maple, elm, and beech. Scattered patches of coniferous trees such as hemlock and spruce are also found within the region. The forest floor is home to a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, herbs, ferns, and mosses. While fruit-bearing plant life is rare within the forest, many of the plants are edible.   The land is home to a large variety of bestial predators that reside within the forest. This includes things such as bears, wolves, large cats, apes, giant spiders, and many more. Deer, Moose, and Elk are some of the larger and more common herbivorous animals. A wide variety of smaller, forest-dwelling, creatures also have made this region their home in high quantities. While many of the animals found here are fairly common to find across the world, other strange beasts are found here as well. One of the most notable is the Aartrag, a giant humanoid creature with elongated arms and extremely territorial temperament.

Natural Resources

Wood and herbs are the most bountiful resources in the Grell Woods. The abundance of wildlife, both land dwelling and aquatic, also provides an ample food source.
