Mercenary & Bounty Hunter

Mercenaries are skilled soldiers that work as freelancers or as part of a guild, rather than for a specific country, state, city, town, or noble. Most will take jobs anywhere they can get them, regardless of the moral or political implications. Mercenaries oft visit strange lands and dangerous wildernesses, valuing only strong leaders and the tips of their blades. When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine what kind of mercenary you were, where you worked, and what your personal moral code may be, if any. You may also want to determine your past experiences as a mercenary, and how they may affect your character's decision making in the future.   Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Animal Handling, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, Survival (choose two) Tool Proficiencies: Choose from Cartographer's Tools, Cook's Utensils, Smith's Tools, Navigator's Tools, a Playing Card Set, or a Dice Set, and one vehicle type (Land or Water) Equipment: A trophy taken from a fallen enemy (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a set of bone dice or a deck of cards, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp   Feature: Skilled Soldier for Hire   Wherever you go, you have no trouble finding those who are looking to contract skilled fighters. You are adept at negotiating terms with these people, gaining access to any helpful resources they might have, and seeing through any lies they might be telling you.   You gain the following:   You have advantage on (Charisma) Persuasion or (Charisma) Intimidation checks made while discussing payment with someone looking to hire you. You can requisition any resources they might have access to, such as soldiers, horses, or weapons, on the condition that you return them before receiving your final payment. If any of these resources are damaged or missing, their cost is covered by you. You have advantage on (Wisdom) Insight checks made against someone who is hiring you.     Suggested Characteristics   Life in the service of money for violence can do many things to a person. Some break and become bloodthirsty warmongers or money hungry cowards, some fall to the lowest forms of self hate for the acts they have done, and yet others throw away all inhibitions and become champions of the righteous. Work with your DM to determine what your personality traits, bonds, and flaws are, and how they interact with your mercenary background.

Variant Mercenary: Bounty Hunter

Most mercenaries work in small groups, with the goal of being hired together and splitting the final cut between themselves. You, however, prefer to go it alone. There's more money to be made that way, right? Because of this, your work as a Mercenary differs from most. Besides, those who are looking to hire men to fight in wars want to order in bulk. This is what makes you a Bounty Hunter: you work alone and you avoid political conflict as much as possible, all the while tracking down and taking on single targets.   Variant Feature: Bring Them in Warm, or Bring Them in Cold   You are especially skilled at killing or capturing single targets. You know exactly how to prevent them from escaping, and how to end their life in an effective manner, no matter the circumstance.   You gain the following:
  • You have advantage on (Charisma) Intimidation checks made against your targets.
  • You have advantage on all checks made to place your target under the grappled condition.
  • You can cast the spell compelled duel once per day.
