Heavenly Balefire

From a journal found within ancient ruins-

It starts with the lights -- the green balefire, cold and and evanescent, dancing in the skies. Normally it's a familiar sight far to the north and south, but when it begins to wash over more distant skies, it's a warning of what is to come. The twin suns have now become one in the sky, the smaller and brighter light crossing the disk of the larger in the sky.   The first night, they are seen further from the poles than normal; the following day, those sharp of vision can spot them above the clouds during the day. Animals and those who aren't foolish begin to bring things inside and out from under the sky -- caves, stone buildings, and deep valleys are safest.   That night, the aurorae dazzle more brightly than before, with blues and reds joining the more omnipresent green.   The next day in the week is noticeably brighter, and warmer; people only go outside in the sunlight for short times, or in heavy cloaks and robes. The wise do not go out at all; they've seen those foolish enough to tempt fate with the Bright Days in their youth succumb to wasting illnesses later in life.   Halfway through the week, and the weather is getting violent; storms are more common, with violent cracks of lightning constantly churning through the clouds. When there is sunlight, it feels warmer than usual, but it burns the skin and flesh far faster than the warmth would suggest; the glare from the Bright Days can blind one for life if you are foolish enough to look at the sun for more than a few moments.   For the rest of the week, it is only safe to leave shelter during the night -- storms are still a potential risk, depending on where you live and climate, but the burning glare of the sun does not shine at night. People remain together, sheltering in smaller communal safety of caves or stone buildings.   Even after the week ends, the aurorae calm, and the small sun leaves the disk of the large to become two suns in the sky once more, it is dangerous to stay out in the light for too long -- burns occur more easily in the months following the Bright Days, and it will take time before the suns no longer burn with so much vigor.   But they will come again, as they always do. - Farghani
