Ashardalon

This is the Great Wyrm who was killed by Dydd, the human druid of elements.
    Ashardalon
  • He was an enormous and powerful red Great Wyrm and was the most feared dragon in the realm at the time, due to his many-hundreds-of-years-long reign of terror
  • During this time, a dragon cult emerged which worshipped him as a god. They built the Nightfang Spire, a massive stone edifice which stretched 1,600 feet into the air.
  • Tales of his hoard were legendary. Many an adventurer died trying to find it.
  • Dydd, a human druid of the Grove, pulled together a cadre to hunt him and attempt to end the carnage
  • When Dydd first "slew" him, she did so after an epic battle in which many of her fellow druids died. Ashardalon attempted to crush her by rearing up and throwing himself to the ground. But as he did, Dydd raised her scimitar and pierced the dragon's hide, ripping his heart from his chest. When he was in his death throes, he managed to kill all but three of the remaining druids who were there, so Dydd hastily banished him to the Abyss.
  • There was only one dusty tome that mentioned him, so Erky mostly dismisses the tale as hogwash, but interesting enough to read. The cult's leader was supposedly named Gulthias. And it was said that he acted as an intermediary between Ashardalon and the warped people who worshiped the Great Wyrm. There was one mention of something nefarious that Gulthias supposedly did to Ashardalon's heart, but the tome was not in very good shape, so what Erky could read of it didn't track or make any sense. The only things he could make out had to do with some ritual in the bowels of the Nightfang Spire, in which Gulthias was supposed to "prepare" for the "return" of his master.
  • It is rumored that in his desperation to save his own life, Ashardalon took the balor Ammet as his heart, binding them together until one or the other died .
  • However he managed it, Ashardalon managed to survive his mortal wound. When he recovered enough to manage it, he traveled back to the material plane and sought out and killed Dydd the druid, burning everything in his sight in the process. This is how the Ashen Plain came to be.
  • He must have returned to the Outer Planes after this bit of revenge work was completed, because he has not been sighted or heard from ever again
