Brinecrawler Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Brinecrawler

Did you just kiss that brinecrawler?
Yeah, why?
That's its butt not its mouth, you idiot...
Brinecrawlers are one of the very few living species in The Great Lakes on Ocearia. These animals consume the bones of the deceased that lay along the lakebeds of the Great Lakes, as well as catching small animals that swim through their long legs.

Anatomy

Brinecrawlers resemble arthropods, with eight long legs. These legs are attached to a flat, disc shaped body, with three eyes on the top of this body. The eyes have a lime green sclera, with a large pupil. Next to each eye is a small yellow photophore, which can be seen from outside a brine lake when they are close to the edge.

Brinecrawlers are a tan/orange colour, with darker orange/brown stripes along their legs. Their legs have three inward facing hooks, used to grapple onto their prey. Their mouths sit on the bottom of their body, so their legs can easily pull in food, with their anus on the top of their head between their three eyes.

Reproduction

During breeding season, the much smaller males will attempt to climb the female and fertilise the eggs as they are laid into the lakebed. The females must be laying down for this, with their legs sprawled outwards, since the males would not be able to reach the females otherwise. The eggs are left alone until they hatch, and the baby brinecrawlers will feast on scraps they find on decomposing animals until they are able to hunt by themselves.

Behaviour

Brinecrawlers are usually a fairly passive species, and only become aggressive when shown aggression from another species, usually one hunting them. They wave four of their legs up in the water as a sign of defense, to appear larger, and secrete a yellow liquid (not urine) from their anus to deter anything.

Location

Brinecrawlers are found mostly within the The Great Lakes, north of Gefloania and the Kirinian Kingdom. They are most common in the Lilypad Lake, occasionally travelling up the rivers further north.

Diet

These large arthropods are carnivores, feeding on any small animal unlucky enough to swim between their long legs. A common animal eaten by brinecrawlers are brine fish, another animal well adapted to the salty conditions.
