The Mirror (Midden) Moors

A wild tractless land of fen and bog, shrouded perpetually in mist, once a sportsmen's paradise and hunting ground of Nobility, now the boonies of a backwater. Few come, and fewer leave.

Geography

On the Northern bank of a bend in the River Baren sits the village of Moorsend. To the North lies the last copse of woods before the sparsely wooded moors, running up a short hill called Shellback Hill. Technically a peninsula, the landmass is only inhabited on the West side, as the East is not protected from the Northerly wind by Shellback Hill.   The River Baren passes by lazily, as the river starts off fairly shallow due to the moors, the source of which is Baren Lake just around the bend.   The ground is soft, consisting mostly of thick peat with the occasional outcropping of slate popping up, usually the site of some man-made structure.

Fauna & Flora

Being largely a peat bog, the ground is very fertile and thick with nutrients. Thus, there is always a lush covering of grasses and ferns, rushes and reeds, but the soil structure is not solid enough to support many trees, and almost none of large stature. Along the waters edge grow many different species of flower, root, and fungus, some of which are found nowhere else in the Empire.   The Midden Moors are populated by many species of freshwater fish, most notably lake trout and big mouth bass, which drew Noble sportsmen in ages past to vacation in the area. Also found in great abundance are different species of eel and lamprey, including dangerous giant eels that sometimes attack fishermen.   In addition to a large of amount of fish, there are several different species of newt and salamander, frog and toad, and some other more rare and potentially valuable/dangerous amphibians, but hardly any reptiles, as the freshwater is quite cold in temperature. Most of these amphibians feed on the insects and fish that swim in the clear pure waters.   Larger animals are fewer, as there is little vegetation outside of lichen, ferns, moss and small scrawny cyprus and willow trees, and the small populations of red-tail deer range far and wide in search of food. The predators that prey on them are more likely to be passive hunters rather than pursuers.
