Sehjad Khalil

Captain Sehjad Khalil (a.k.a. HJ, Captain)

Sehjad Khalil is the captain of the crew of sand pirates belonging to the vessel, Prince of the Sands, which is named after the captain himself, as his given name means "prince". He and is his crew are currently harbouring the High King of Nursham, Jahrif Mesbah, on their vessel as the monarch recovers from amnesia.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Sehjad was not born into the life of piracy, but rather started his life as the son of an impoverished family living in a small village on the edge of Nursham's territory, far from the capital of kingdom's capital oasis. The youngest of two boys, Sehjad and his brother were taught from a very young age how to gather resources, hunt what little foodsources were available in the harsh Dawalsha desert, and especially how to be strict with any resources they did manage to find. In the village, there was always too little food, too little water, and too little fun. Sehjad's older brother was often unwell, and he found himself caring for him as if he were the eldest child instead. However, he often wondered if he was to blame, feeling guilty that his presence meant another mouth to feed and that he was taking away food his brother could be having without him there. As he grew older, Sehjad's guilt grew and he became tired of waking up each morning knowing that the day would be a repetition of the last, wishing that there was more to life than being hungry, sick and tired all the time.    One day, Sehjad's wonderlust and wish to explore what lay beyond his simplistic village life was set into motion when a crew of sand pirates ransacked the village. He was in utter awe at their freedom to travel and not have to worry about having a roof over their heads or exhausting the resources within walking distance of the village. When they reached his house, Sehjad asked them to spare his family and sick brother and in exhcnage for doing so he would join their crew. The pirates were intrigued by his courage, as most villagefolk in the places they pillaged cowered and surrendered immediately, often fleeing as their initial response. Before he departed with the crew, Sehjad managed to pick-pocket a small coin pouch from the Captain, discreetly handing it to his family and making his parents promise to use it on medicine for his brother. Although the Captain knew what Sehjad had done, the woman was rather impressed that he had been able to steal from her at all, and knew that he would make a valuable asset to her crew with the proper training.

Mental Trauma

Sehjad cannot allow food to go to waste, as it was so scare to have a proper meal when he was a faeling. He also is wracked with guilt whenever someone goes without at his expense, and will always revert whatever decision has been made so that instead he goes without. Sehjad gets quite emotional and enraged when he sees impoverished villages that have been neglected by the government of Nursham.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Sehjad is incredibly motivated in helping the poverty-stricken village folk of Nursham through multiple means, such as stealing from the rich fae folk of Nursham and distributing some of their wealth to the poor, or hunting wild camels etc. and providing food for the impoverished. However, since he took Jahrif Mesbah onto his vessel, Sehjad has been torn between keeping the High King hidden while he recovers from his amnesia and helping the people who he knows need assistance in the absence of the High King - his drops to the poor have been dwindling, and also more of the nobility and higher-ranked members of Nursham society have placed bounties on Sehjad's head, further increasing the risk to Jahrif.

Likes & Dislikes

Sehjad enjoys philanthropy and helping others, particularly children, avoid the struggles he dealt with as he was growing up.   He hates vegetables, mostly because this is what he ate a lot of when he was a faeling and is sick of them.

Social

Religious Views

Sehjad worships Dahikya, Nursham's primary goddess, but does not follow either of the Sunrise or Sunset Sects. He wishes the priests would stop arguing so that their attention could be turned to the people outside the capital who desperately need the help of the monarchy and church.
