Mantle
Basic Information
Anatomy
Mantles were a bipedal species with two legs and two arms. Their silhouettes would have been indistinguishable from that of a human.
They had three major "organs" the core, the shell, and the essence.
The core was a metal object that the mantle's soul was bound to. This usually took the form of a bracer, but any piece of metal would have been sufficient. Lustrous, their homeland, tended to import fine Dwarvish steel to form into cores for new mantles.
The shell was comparable to skin and formed a hard barrier around the mantle's essence. It felt like warm glass to the touch. The essence was visible within and acts somewhat like a prism. In areas of darkness the mantle's body will appear black. However when well lite golden patterns similar to nebula appeared within their essence.
Genetics and Reproduction
Two mantles could have participated in a ritual in which they merge their bodies around a piece of armor that does not contain a soul. It was believed that if Zitala, The Life Giver deemed them worthy as parents a new mantle will form around this core in 5 to 6 months. Much like an egg.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Mantles had no need to eat or sleep. Rest did help them heal and they could consume things. For example they would have benefited from a healing potion. This made them uniquely qualified to live in the desert.
Biological Cycle
A new mantle could have formed around a deceased mantle's core. Assuming that the core is intact. This process takes 50 to 60 years. This process stoped some time in 935 AS.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Despite their lack of facial features mantles would have heard, smelled, and felt as well as humans. They did not have a sense of taste and can see better than humans, as they had darkvision.
Civilization and Culture
Gender Ideals
Any two mantles could mate and have few clearly defined organs. Gender and sex had no meaning to them.
History
The mantles were believed to have been created by Zitala during The Sundering in order to spare some of the soldiers that would have died in the elemental blast created by Nozhor's weapon.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Humans and their plane-touched kin often viewed the mantles as victims, and some people tried to "cure" them.
