Stiltsburrough (Stilts • buhr-oh)

A New Beginning

| The smell of pine and cedar is a signature aroma in the new village of Stiltsburrough. With construction always underway north of the Passing Hill District, homes are constantly being built for all the refugees in need of a new place to start over. The peaceful atmosphere almost seems to good to be true, until you begin to realize that none of the locals enter Fortune's Forest. |
The village of Stiltsburrough is the second village north of the King's Road in Fortune's Forest. With the Hundred Year Balance War causing refugees to flee from WestReach, the Eyeless Desert, and Ammerdorinian, Fortune's Forest provided the safest location to start a new life. Many artisans, including carpenters, blacksmiths, glassblowers, masons, and weavers can be found here with the high demand for work. With a contract held with Brynharde to provide coin for goods, the village has established a bank in order to keep up with demand and supply.

Demographics

The inhabitants of Stiltsburrough are a combination of refugees fleeing from the Hundred Year Balance war, and the refugees that managed to escape the destruction of Ammerdorinian. Just to the east of the King's Road, this village has a small hill with all the shops and inn located, and a residential section currently being built on an open field just north of the hill. WoodHauls are seen here often as timber is in high demand for constructing all the new buildings. With job opportunities available for anyone in the carpentry business, you're sure to find an artisan able to fix any of your mount needs. Some locals still have the Ammerdorinian badge hidden in their posessions, and remember the day that their homeland was destroyed. They hide their heiritage in fear of what happened to the city might happen to them.

Despite being the furthest away from the kingdom, Ammerdon still has distinct wealth classes. The poor are those working in labour - typically at the timber mill - and live simple lives. The middle class have chosen a trade or skill to excell at and have made a career in that, such as a blacksmith, a soldier, or a carpenter. The rich are those who hold power, such as a business owner, royal or political figure, or one mastered in their skill or craft.

Government

Stiltsburrough's founders were originally the refugees from Ammerdorinian. With nowhere to go during the war, they decided to start a new town just south of their former home. Seeing a new village being formed, refugees from all over heard the news and began to head there in hopes to have a place of their own. Respecting the ones who originally established the town, the Ammerdorinian refugees began the official council, although they hide their heiritage from those who have come from elsewhere.

Income - Stiltsburrough makes its money from the trade it receives through the Brynharde Bank. The locals trade in their goods for coin, and a tax is enforced to help pay for the construction of new buildings.

Economy - Most commonfolk work as a laborer for various artisans making 2sp per day. Artisans can earn up to 2gp per day, while merchants, councilmen, and shopowners earn a comfortable wage of up to 3gp per day. Citizens of Ammerdon Outpost pay 36sp/mth for taxes.

Law - Small crimes are handled by the authority of the Artisan's Guild with the enforcement of the locals. The culprit is put into a cell until a trial can be held. The council is both judge and jury and decides the sentence depending on the crime. Large crimes are given to the Brynharde Patrol for an investigation to be conducted. The suspects are brought to the Brynharde Prison until the investigation is complete and a trial is conducted before a magistrate. The list of crimes can be found in the Eldinien Lawbook.

Industry & Trade

With refugees from all over, the various skills make for a plethora of options for industry and trade. Farmers, hunters, and gatherers provide food for the markets and chefs, while carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, tanners, and weavers provide the luxeries needed for living. Any goods could either be traded to another local within the village, or sold to the Brynharde Bank for coin which they can spend in the shop for various needs.
Byorn & Barker's Range

| A rickety fence borders an archery range with an L shaped building attached to it. The targets are facing away from the hill so that no stray arrows fly into the residential district, and a rack holds several used bows. |

Byorn & Barker's Range is the place to go for a bargain on any ammunition you might need, from bows to bullets and anything in between. With Barker's fletching skills and Byorn's ranger knowledge, the two are a power duo when it comes to making quality product. Byorn is also able to teach an adventurer interested in learning to become the ranger class, making this an essential stop for those wishing to multi-class into a ranger.

  • Infrastructure

With the village being quite new, the buildings are fairly modern with sturdy foundations and clay tile roofs. The timber coming from McScrute's Timber Mill make the homes durable albeit flammable, and the combination of artisans make for a unique array of designs for houses. A local lake nearby provides the town with clean drinkable water, and the only visable road is the King's Road to the west of the village.

    Districts

Residential District - A district with some area always under construction, the residential district is where the majority of residents live in Stiltsburrough. Though there are not any shops around, with a good search you can find a local that either deals with or knows somebody that deals with whatever you're looking for.

Shopping Hill District - Located at the top of the hill, this district is where you go to buy or sell your goods. Although not as diverse as the Merchant Square in Ammerdon Outpost, the shopping hill district provides a few unique shops that adventurers should take advantage of.

    Assets

When it comes to money, the Brynharde Bank is the only place within Stiltsburrough that provides an adequate amount of coin. Other than that, most residents either deal with trade, or take their goods to the bank and exchange it for coin.

    Brynharde Bank

    | This fortified building with purple tiled rooftops stands at the back of the village with a brass placard hangs above the main entrance that reads Brynharde Bank. The security overlooking from the balcony as well as guarding the entrance makes one think twice before robbing this establishment. The smell of lavender fills the air inside as an incense burns, and customers holding goods wait in line by one of the several desks. More guards stand watch by a large vault with a complex door located next to a loading station at the back of the building. |

Inside this fortified bank are a few kiosks were you can go to exchange any goods you have for coin. The exchange rate varies on the demand and quality of the product, but the bank will accept most offers. The goods are collected once a week, or if the storage becomes too full and requires to be emptied. A guarded caravan will travel from Brynharde to collect the goods while adding more coin to the bank.

Inventory - Coin at half price

    The Resting Hill (Tavern)

    | This small, quaint tavern has a placard with overgrown lichen and moss on it that reads "The Resting Hill". A single story building with rooms attached to the back, the smell of roast mutton coming from the well kept common room gives a comforting feeling as it reminds you of home |

The Resting Hill is the only tavern in Stiltsburrough with few rooms available. Adventurers take a gamble when trying to rent a room, as it's usually filled with contractors or other adventurers. (rolling a 10 or higher on a 1d20 allows a room). The common room is always lively with workers enjoying a glass of stiltsburrough wine, a drink bragged about by the locals. The bartender is an elderly human male with a hospitable personality, and the barmaids flirt with the customers in hopes of earning a tip.

    Points of interest

Although the village of Stiltsburrough seems like your everyday peacefull village, there is something that is not quite right about it. If you spend enough time, you'll come to learn that most of the residents do not venture out into the forest. Listening to a few of the elder's stories over a campfire with a drink will find out that the village has a dark history with the keepers of the forest.

    Folklore

    Wrath of the Dryads

The story goes that when the village was first being built, the locals would cut down the trees from the surrounding forest, not giving it a second thought. A few trees turned into many, and eventually this made the keepers of the forest angry. They sent their dryads with treants and awakened trees to put a stop to anymore deforestation, and made a deal with the residents of Stiltsburrough. They would let them to keep the land they have already stolen as long as they do not cut down another tree. The villagers agreed in fear that they would be crushed under the roots of the forest, and have not ventured into the woods since. Those with good intentions enter the forest without worry, for they know that if they respect nature, nature will return it in kind.

    Fountain of Eldath

The tale of the Fountain of Eldath is a well known song sung by bards all over Eldinien. The song goes as follows:

    | "Beyond the trees that shade the ground,
Where water falls without a sound,
The peaceful air that stirs around,
    She calls upon your name.

A trial will come to test the soul,
A feeble one will pay the toll,
If destiny is your true goal,
    She calls upon your name.

So listen well and follow true,
Let not your your eyes deceive your view,
    If destiny belongs to you,
    She calls upon your name.

Pass the test and rest your mind,
The goddess will tell all in time,
    For prophecy forever binds,
    She calls upon your name.
    |

The legend tells of a great waterfall where the water falls into an Æther portal that leads to the Blessed Fields of Elysium. A hero worthy of Eldath's divine blessing will approach the chasm and be greeting by a collosal avatar of Eldath. She will proclaim them as the heroes who will fulfill the prophecy and restore Xios to the Great Circle Era once again. Many adventurers come seeking the waterfall, but the few who find it come back with no such experience.
