Calendars

There are two calendar systems that are used in Emryne, depending on region. Dating wise, they are mostly alternative names for each other. For counting the days and scheduling events, they differ.

Northern Calendar

The Northern Calendar was developed by the ancient dragons, surviving even after the Scourge. It is lunar, a new day beginning at midnight. Months begin and end on a dark moon. They are named for an important event or practice done in that month. Years are based on the planet's rotation, beginning with the summer solstice. It is generally the common calendar, a standard in the North and East.

Month of Sun

  • Sacrament of the Sun (Summer Solstice)

  • Feast of Ancestors (Day 10)

Month of Rain

Month of Harvest

  • Ring Day (Day 4)

Month of Gods

Month of Remembrance

  • Night of Whispers (day 31)

Month of Frost

Month of Dark

Month of Growth

Cycles

Years are counted in a 12 year cycle corresponding to an element in the Northern Calendar. To calculate the total year number since year zero, once would use (cycle*12)+year. The current total year is 1037, though it is not common to list this in Draconic and other spiritual circles, as there are still many superstitions about cycles.

Western Calendar

The Western Calendar was created by the ancient elves. It is solar, a day begins when the sun rises. Months are dictated by the seasons and the position of the sun and earth. The months are named after Elvhen deities, and days in a month are simply numbered. A new year begins on the spring equinox, so their months are stacked differently than the Northern Calendar. Eras are dictated by major events, the current era being the Fractured Era. This calendar was adopted by the South.

Dating

Because the two calendars sometimes intermingle, dating may involve both for the month name. Their corresponding months are also slightly shifted, as their new years celebrations and resetting of the year take place at different times. Nadan and Month of Hearths take place at the same time, even though Nadan is month 11 in the Elven calendar and Hearths is month 8 in the Dragon calendar.   Common language dating involves the northern calendar, but in some areas the elven names for months is used. Papers that go international may use both. If the cycle is left off, it is implied to be the current cycle. The elven month is mostly optional.
