Utzbein

Utzbein is the Capital city of Harlong and center of all government and technological activities. The city itself has a diverse selection of burrows, however a not so diverse population, with nearly 90% of inhabitants here being gnomish. An outer wall surrounds the territory measuring about ten feet tall. Being the technological capital of the world, the entire west half of the city is home to three prestigious universities, and countless labs and corporations. These institutions operate with very little oversight and a near unlimited operating budget thanks to the queen. Some of the top institutions in this area include The South Harlong Institute of Technology, Peralta Engineering Academy, Utzbein University (The W), and The Garden of Eden Co.
The northern sector of the city has it's own separate gate which is manned 24/7. This district is where the Queen resides and carries out her rule. This is also the sector in which councilors, lawmakers, judges, and military leaders work from. In order to gain entry to this area persons are subjected to a full weapons and background check.
The people of Harlong do have the capacity for fun, despite the seriousness given to their work. The eastern side of the city, along the coast of Jeritza Lake, is home to the combat arena and the zoo. The southern entrance of the city is also known as the residential and commercial district with a wide array of shops and services. This area is also were the mercenary registrar is located and managed.
Since the Calamity, many stronger powers have attempted to take advantage of smaller less military focused kingdoms, Harlong being no exception. For that reason many people from Harlong pray that the tales of the gods be true and that they will return to bring balance to the world. This is perhaps best represented in the central spire instillation. Seven brass towers elevating nearly twenty stories up each with arms interlocking with one another. A golden head on each tower each dons a different mask and colored halo above their heads. A boar for Harlong, an owl for Tumpal, a wooly rhino for Ylgir, a dragon for Vysten, a bear for Reqir, a cougar for Ajeroc, and an albatross for Albeita. Each tower also reaches out a hand to the center clock that hangs over the city which the statues strikes on the hour. The towers are an ode to the old ways in which the seven kingdoms supported each other unconditionally before the time of the gods had ended. This archeological marvel took nearly ten years to perfect and marked the era in which Harlong overtook Reqir as the technological powerhouse of the world.
Recent events:  As Shadows appearances have become more common, especially near the outer territories, military protection has been greatly reduced in these areas.  In cases where shadows have not taken over completely, many citizens have elected to leave their homes and move inland where mercenary groups are still operating.  Utzbein has seen a large influx in new arrivals because of this, but lacks the room inside the walls to house them.  Utzbein has thus far been unsuccessful in keeping refugees away and has done little to provide support for them.  With no home to return to, and no better place to escape to, a community of lost souls has come to life outside the walls of Utzbein, creating a vast tent city.
