What do Animals do? Hunt food, which is other animals or plants and raise young.   What if they were doing that during something like a nuclear winter, where food is very hard to find and conditions are very harsh? They have to cope with snow, ice and wind.   In addition to the inhospitable climate they have a territory that they must protect from other animals and larger predators. In addition to a that, in our setting, a wind blows in a strange Mist that effects things around it. Animals talk and grow in intelligence. Inanimate objects cobble themselves into beings. These beings made of organic and inorganic material start to wander the frozen wasteland.   The settings includes large swaths of dead forests, abandoned cities and towns, an ocean strewn with debris, a tarry swamp and an oil rig site.   An energy company called Energy built these oil rigs. The town turned into a small City that shrank the forest, severed it with highways. The animals couldn't come near it because it was so populated with humans. But now it's encased in snow and ice and the animals have started to come back.   It's now populated by Bears, deer, foxes, rabbits, ravens, eagles, wolves, coyotes, seals, sea lions, whales, porpoises, otters. Not to mention all manner of abandoned pets.
