Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

When an elf is born, the father would give the child its first name (the father-name.) The father-name is usually a variation of the father’s own name, and if the child is a girl it will usually be a variation of the mother’s name. Sometimes a child would also receive a mother-name, sometimes called “names of insight” since they usually had something to do with the child’s fate. The mother-name tended to be more widely used than the father-name. The upper class elven families usually have an elaborate ceremony when the child turns 10 where they would give themselves their own name. This name is usually inspired by the child’s personal characteristic - a mark of individuality. This name is more private, and is usually only used among family and close friends and probably wouldn’t be widely known. Sometimes elves will have “after-names” which are earned later in life, which is more of a nickname/title of honor.

Beauty Ideals

Longer, pointed ears are extremely desirable. Having brown eyes is rare, and stunning to most. Any sign of skin impurity must be dealt with immediately as it's considered a sign of poor hygiene and poverty, as well as having dry or greasy hair. Thin noses are also ideal, as well as a slender figure and face.

Gender Ideals

There are few gender ideals between men and women, any differences are usually anatomical. It could be viewed as an almost perfect society, where men and women are equal in their opportunities.

Courtship Ideals

Elves love having sex and is very important to them however, children produced from such informal arrangements bear no stigma because new life is welcome in almost any elf community, whatever the relationship that produced it. Elven courtship between other elves lasts for hundreds of years before marriage, and it is unheard of for elves to marry young (maturity is reached at 25) until they've had a few more decades of experience to understand themselves. No parental or clan consent is required for courtships: an adult elf is free to associate with anyone who accepts their attentions--even someone of another race.  Light flirtations and even long-term dalliances between elves are more common than actual marriages.

Relationship Ideals

After having children, any sexual drive tends to dwindle. A marriage between elves, however, is a centuries-long commitment that is never undertaken lightly. An elven marriage ceremony can take many forms. Though it is often a ritual celebrated before the entire community, it can consist simply of two elves speaking the words that bind them forever with no witnesses except the trees and the grass. . Dowries are not usually exchanged unless the marriage is of considerable political import, though gifts to the newly wedded couple from the community are common. Though elves rarely fall out of love with one another almost never remarry after the death of a spouse, they often do spend time away from one another as a means of refreshing the relationship. Such "vacations" from one another keep a marriage fresh and vital by allowing each partner to grow independently of the other.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

There are two major languages used by the Elvish; Common and Elvish. They are learnt together, and are equally used.

Common Dress Code

Practical yet decorative. Fitting yet comfortable. Some wear robes, others wear more casual. Men and women wear similar clothes as well as people in similar classes. Materials usually include wool and silk, but most will have their own individual style as they learn about themselves throughout their decades of life.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

The bodies of dead elves are dismembered and taken to the treetops, where they are left to be consumed by white vultures.

Common Taboos

Elves share the raising of children within the community. It's considered taboo to ask who your biological parents are.   There is a strong taboo against harming the natural environment; especially trees and animals.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The elves look down on those who aren't strong enough to withstand the cold of the North; Humans the usual target of disapproval, but the Dwarves are also frowned upon. There is tension between the Orcs and Elves due to fights over territory, however, there is also an unspoken admiration because of their strength. Tortles are viewed as wise and amicable by the elves, and their company is very much enjoyed. The elves don't have any strong feelings for or against Goblins, Tieflings or Lizardfolk.
