Dredger's Maw

The Dredger's Maw, the deepest hole in the world. The chasm is said to reach the depths themselves, but no expedition, man or Drowner, has ever reached the bottom.   The Maw is surrounded by mysterious formations jutting around the rim, made of Kraken bones, as if the World Eater itself rests beneath the surface, waiting for its day to drink the seas and split the skies.   Currently, it's only known sentient residents are the Drowners who have turned the higher levels of the Maw into their capital, just below where the light reaches the Maw, but if you look deep enough, you can hear whispers and etchings disturbing enough to scare a Drowner into rising.   Be careful when swimming down, Drowner. There's a chance you might not come up.

Geography

If I were to rate the Dredger's Maw from "average" to "exotic" I would say it's a complete anomaly.   The rim of the Maw is a massive 200 kilometers across and rests 500 fathoms below the surface. The spires of bone that line the rim vary in size, from 600 meters to 1500 meters, enough to reach the surface. Nobody is sure what kind of Kraken could leave such ribs behind or why the ribs line the Maw, but some theorize it was an ancient ancestor of the Patracite.   Around 400 meters below the rim rests the bulk of the Drowner's Capital. A large and bustling city that more resembles and underwater Rotho Harbor than a ghost town.   As you would expect, it's filled with Drowners from all over the world. But even further below lies the Point of Mystery. A mark around 5000 meters below the city's border. This is where you can find Saphrogen and artifacts scattered across the cliffsides and floors lining the walls of the Maw. However, it is unknown what dangers lie beyond this point. Many Drowners have gone missing at this point, some have even gone into a catatonic state and in extreme cases, fading away soon after.   Knowing this however, the city still chooses to expand downward. They want to find out what made those etchings and artifacts, because clearly no human would ever make something so strange

Fauna & Flora

The Dredger's maw is filled with all sorts of dark-dwellers. It's essentially it's own ecosystem down there.   You have the classic Gulper Squids, Puffer Sharks, Blind Larcugas all sorts of stuff. But the most dangerous creatures aren't always the ones that look scary, it's the ones that look pretty.   Deep in the abyss exists a section where the light never shines, no matter how big your eyes are, no matter what kind of dark-dweller you are, no light will ever reach the darkest parts of the Abyss. No natural light that is.   You see, the Abyss is filled with these special bio-luminescent creatures like the Lantern Feeder, a special type of sea anemone big enough to eat Carrion Sharks.   Or a Flash Blitz, an eel that takes advantage of the sensitive eyes of it's pray by emitting a bright flash akin to a stun grenade.   The Abyss is filled with strange creatures, no matter how uninterested you are in "biology" and the like, if you look deep enough you're bound to find something you like.

Natural Resources

The deeper in the Maw you go, the more Saphrogen you find. Saphrogen is a special blue gas found in deep crevices on the seafloor. It has a habit of pooling together on little cracks and is lighter than the water, this is strange but it still pools pools together like an underwater lake.   The Saphrogen doesn't have much practical use outside of lanterns, nightlights and knick-knacks, but legend has it that Saphrogen was once the fuel used to power the Arks, meaning that it is a holy item to be used in rituals and ceremonies. The fact that Saphrogen doesn't occur naturally does support this theory, but not everyone believes it.   Perhaps one day this sinking gas will reveal the secrets of the Arks, but one can only hope.
