Master Inventor Aldebarn Vereus Ballynock (a.k.a. Mad Scientist)
A chief scientist for the Gnomes and the inventor of the process to create skyships, Aldebarn Ballynock is one of the most important figures in the history of Wandrei. With great charisma and what many say was a touch of madness, he experimented for nearly three decades until he perfected the process to create mana crystals, the power source of all skyships. He lived as a very successful man, and upon his death his son, Garnevas Ballynock took over the family business, and proceeded to create one of the largest technology empires in the world.

Personal history
Aldebarn Vereus Ballynock was born to humble beginnings. The son of a teacher and a construction worker, Aldebarn had little money growing up, but his parents instilled in him a love of learning and an insatiable curiosity. He eventually was awarded an academic scholarship to the Royal Gnomish Academy, where he would tenure as a professor of magical studies for a time, before striking out on his own as an inventor. Very late in his life, Aldebarn would make what would be his crowning discovery, and one of the most important ones of the last hundred years, if not more. He discovered the process to create mana crystals, which would power his vision for a wondrous invention: the skyship. With this new form of transportation (and, later, warfare), the Gnomes of Windgrace became one of the most wealthy peoples on the face of Wandrei.
Later in his life, Aldebarn became increasingly erratic. He began to mutter to himself, and took to staying in his laboratory for extended periods of time, often sleeping and eating within, with no excursions outside and permitting no visitors. Some gnomes close to him thought that Aldebarn had finally fried his brain with his experiments, but his prestige and the respect his colleagues held for him prevented them from expressing these concerns too loudly. He eventually fell ill suddenly, and to the despair of all the Gnomish people, he died.
