Nastran Pansal

Nastran Pansal

I scoffed and slammed my wooden palette to the table beside me. The oils were stubborn despite my brutish frustration; they refused to bespatter the dark crimson-colored walls of this small study. It was the fruits: a few peaches, an apple, and a pear that went tumbling from the wooden bowl that had been my subject. I nearly swept the leg of my easel as I frustratedly stomped toward the window. It was pleasant outside and the smallest caress of the breeze welcomed itself into the room. I would have enjoyed the brine in the air if not for my frustration with my sudden lack of creativity. I heard the door groan in protest as it was opened. "Iule?" a familiar voice graveled, "What is wrong, girl?" It was my mentor - my master - Nastran Pansal.   Nastran was a man nearing his midlife and he showed it well. The long, dark beard that he wore bore streaks of gray. I, nor anyone else, ever had the heart to tell him that it only made him appear ghostly against his pale, wizened skin. His eyes were deep-set; so much so that I could not quite tell the color of them. Perhaps brown. Expressive eyebrows crowned his face beneath his craggy forehead. The bridge of his nose, slightly crooked, lead to a downturned point. His thin lips moved as he approached the easel that I had nearly sent out the window. He was quite tall - a foreboding man beyond six feet in height. His eyes turned down as he fetched a peach that he had nearly kicked from the floor. I felt my heart sink as I watch him look between the fuzzy drupe and my face. He dismissively wagged his finger at me with a scholarly smile. Quietly, he began to arrange the fruits how they appeared on my unfinished piece.   "Come here," he gestured politely, "I've made the same mistake you have here one hundred or so times."
