Kug'chi

Kug'chi

Kug'chi was a member of one of the small bands of Kobolds on the Bright Isles. His band had vowed not to take sides during Xylaaria's return. Shortly after he had come of age, while he was out hunting, one of the larger bands supporting the Shackled Queen raided his home. When his kin resisted, the invaders slew them out of hand. When he saw the carnage, he was devastated. He fled the area without a thought.   As dawn approached, Kug'chi reached the coast. To his surprise, he found the wreckage of a small boat strewn along the rocky shore. As he crept closer, he realized a survivor was among the debris. Not in the mood for any more senseless loss of life, he started a small fire, erected a makeshift shelter from the debris and began tending to the halfling sailor.   Over the next few days, the sailor recovered somewhat. It was quickly evident that he was unable to speak. Over the following days, the sailor, Falder Rumbleeyes, taught Kug'chi several things. The first was Common Sign Language. Although he could not speak, soon, they could communicate efficiently and silently. The second was improved survival skills. They strengthened and enlarged the shelter and began to dry and store smoked fish and game. The third was the use of Leatherworker's Tools. He learned to tan hides and fashion gear from the leather.   After a couple of years together, Falder waded into the surf to attempt to spear a large fish. He encountered a Giant Lightning Eel and was gone before Kug'chi reached him. Kug'chi packed up everything he could carry and began trekking across the island. He began to slip into the camps of other bands of kobolds and take the gear he could not fashion for himself. It was during this time that he made his big score.   One of the bands had captured a human thief. Kug'chi stole the rogue's pack, cut the thong on his cage, and then slipped into the night. While the human escaped, Kug'chi now had access to new gear, including Thieves' Tools. These significantly enhanced his abilities and he quickly became skilled with them.   He continued moving about the island, avoiding notice from any of the kobold bands until, one day, he came upon a new structure. Camping in the badlands nearby, he observed. Ascertaining that kobolds, dwarves, and other races were working together, he joined in. Affiliating himself with the Kobolds of Fort Holymount, he was quickly accepted and helped wherever asked. Now, much of the work that he can do is complete, so he spends his days hunting, tanning leather and crafting items for the others in the enclave. He still helps himself to a five-finger discount if the opportunity presents itself, but never from anyone affiliated with Fort Holymount or the new Temple of Hanseath.

Ambushed!

We set out this morning just after breakfast. I stayed near the holy donkey. I don't really quite understand what makes donkeys so unique, but I can't deny that their demeanor has a serene calmness. We walked along the road all morning¿without incident. After a brief stop for lunch, we continued our trek. We had decided to start with the southernmost of the unexplored fingers and had almost reached the spot where we would turn east into the jungle when we came on the remains of two holy donkeys lying in the middle of the road.   Jefa foolishly charged forward to check on them, heedless of the arrows in their corpses and the potential for their foul murders to be still lurking in the vicinity. I readied myself for action, and the others in our band cautiously proceeded. When a figure appeared in the trees, I cast a sorcerous blade of flame as others joined in. That foul murderer didn't last long and fell from the tree in which he was perched. As we engaged the other figures in the trees, Jefa again showed poor judgment. Despite the plain evidence that these fiends were responsible for the deaths of two holy donkeys and their ambush of us, he tried to parley with them. It was unsuccessful, as was fitting.   As another of the assailants was quickly dealt with, they summoned a giant squirrel. Draal engaged the beast, showing great courage. With my bow, I got off a good shot as the monster ravaged Draal. Nibo healed him, then smote the squirrel, sending it scurrying back into the forest in fear for its life. As we turned to the remaining gnome, he exercised discretion, if not valor, and fled into the forest as well.   We revived the treed gnome for questioning, but he proved uncooperative. Jefa continued to be a problem, apparently convinced that we would have to make peace with the gnomes at some point. Clearly, Newt has addled his brains and instilled him with the bane of Kobold-kind from time immemorial: morals. Having set themselves against kobolds and the Servants of Hanseath and having committed the sacrilege of murdering holy donkeys, the entire tribe must be slain, atoning for the blood of the innocent beasts they slew by spilling their own.   There was some dispute over how to deal with the filthy gnomish scum, and although he deserved death, I tossed a ration at his feet in an attempt to get our band to move on before the slime returned with reinforcements. It worked, and we left, setting off into the jungle. Oh, welcome the darkness and cover! But I have marked the gnomes for destruction. When we encounter them again, I shall slay as many as I can. If we're fortunate, we will be able to slay and raze the entire village.

A Call to Arms

Old Grizzleclaw called a group of us together this evening. I'm not sure how we were chosen, but we have a good mix of skills in the group. Burgoegis is a Ranger, I think. He has the look of an explorer and carries a longbow. Draal's sword and axe look well cared for and well used. Knip and Draco have been training with the Temple. Nibo, decked out in mail and armed with javelins and a battleaxe, also seems to have some divine training. Jefa is a bit odd. I think he's a protege of that crazy gnome that runs the agricultural operations. I'm sure his powers will turn out to be just as strange as his mentor's.   In any case, Grizzleclaw asked us to explore the remainder of the island systematically. Several other bands of kobolds are out there, and they either need to join the allies of the Temple, leave the island, or be neutralized so they can pose no threat. Who knows what other creatures remain as well? Before arriving at the Temple, I primarily encountered kobolds in my travels, but there was other sign, too.   After we agreed to the assignment, we went down to the Great Room and had a feast of sausages, potatoes and ale. Some seemed to find the fare boring, but after many, many hungry nights, I'll gladly eat sausages and potatoes, and the ale here is incredible. We also participated in a ritual of Atonement. That was interesting. To expiate his uncharitable deeds, Draal was pelted with food. I got in a good shot with a sausage.   We set out on our task tomorrow, so I'll wrap it up here. I'm looking forward to the adventures ahead.
