Nagaké, Goddess of the Ocean

(a.k.a. Great Unseen, Deep Mother)

Divine Domains

The Ocean and the Deep
The Ocean is the ever-present expanse over which Nagaké holds her sway—a vast, unforgiving cradle that offers life as readily as it takes it away. Her worshippers know her as the Great Unseen, a force as constant and unpredictable as the tides. The Ocean is both a giver and destroyer, a realm of endless horizons where the limits of sight are but the beginning of her reach. To those who understand its depths, it is not merely a body of water but an entity that breathes and moves with intention. Yet, it is in the Deep where her true nature lies—an abyssal world hidden beneath the sunlit surface, a place of unspeakable horrors and ancient life that are closer to her than anything mortality could fathom. The Deep is the domain of those who have accepted Nagaké’s call, creatures and beings that defy understanding. It is home to abominations and eldritch things, where darkness is a tangible force and reality bends to her will. It is the repository of forgotten things, the birthplace of madness, where the greatest terrors of the sea lie in wait, subjects to her dark embrace.
Echoes and the Ineffable
Echoes are more than mere ripples on the surface or sounds that travel beneath it; they are remnants of lost souls, the memories of those who succumbed to the Deep; voices trapped beneath the waves. When the drowned perish, their spirits are caught in the Echoes, a murmur of what was, what could have been. This haunting choir gives rise to spectral apparitions and undead that wander the ocean's depths. But the Echoes stretch beyond just the lost; they whisper the ineffable—Nagaké's most dreadful aspect. The Ineffable is what lies beyond the edges of understanding, the unseen machinery of existence that should not, but somehow does, persist. It is the haunting thought that the universe is more terrible than it seems, a place where reason cannot hold. It is everything that should not be, and yet, it is. The Ineffable is the question without an answer, a domain feared even by other gods. Here, Nagaké draws close to the edge of the Outer Gods’ territory, controlling forces that defy mortal comprehension. It is said that in her depths, the very fabric of reality quakes, and Elder Evils and Ancient Powers unnameable by mortal tongues find her presence oppressive and indomitable.
Maritime and Whaling
Maritime, in the context of Nagaké’s dominion, goes beyond the simple life of seafaring. It is a domain marked by a sense of dread, a foreboding anticipation that grips sailors when they push off from the docks. This Maritime domain encompasses the heavy, silent prayers and whispered curses muttered as they venture out into her waters, knowing full well they travel at her mercy. It is the atmosphere of inevitability and pessimism—the unseen storm that may or may not brew, the uncertain fate that hangs over every journey. Mariners often sacrifice valuables and perform rituals to appease her, praying that they cross the sea without invoking her wrath. Whaling, as an extension, is a bloody tribute, a necessary act that straddles survival and sacrilege. Each hunt is an offering, a deal struck with her vast, unknowable depths. Only through blood and sacrifice can mortals hope to placate her, acknowledging that to take from her realm is to owe a debt that must be paid.

Dominion

Nagaké’s dominion is strongest in the Deep, where she exercises absolute control over its creatures and mysteries. In the Ineffable, her reach extends over things beyond mortal comprehension, where reality blurs with the unknown. She has significant sway over Whaling, governing the rituals and tributes of those who hunt the great beasts of the ocean. Her influence wanes in Echoes, the Ocean, and Maritime, where her control is shaped by the natural order and human actions, often overlapping with other deities' domains.

Artifacts

The Tidekeeper's Fang
A massive harpoon fashioned from the tooth of a Vyatlun, the Tidekeeper's Fang is said to have been a gift directly from Nagaké to a long-forgotten whaler king. This harpoon is not merely a tool of the hunt; it possesses the power to control the currents around it. Wielders can summon powerful riptides, whirlpools, and even calm waters at will, granting them dominion over the sea itself. The Fang is imbued with the echoes of every beast it has slain, their mournful wails said to be heard on still nights. Currently, the Fang is in the possession of the Sea-Lord Arros, a pirate king who commands the Fleet of the Wailing Mist. He uses it not only to control the tides for his ships but also as a weapon in battle, channeling the strength of the ocean to overwhelm his enemies. Rumors persist that Arros has been offering up the blood of captured sailors to keep the Fang’s powers intact.

The Gasping Urn
A relic of fear and reverence, the Gasping Urn is a bone-carved vessel covered in the barnacles and teeth of ancient sea creatures. The Urn is said to be filled with a single drop of Nagaké’s ichor, diluted by the waters of the deepest trench in her domain. When opened, the Urn releases an inescapable, suffocating mist that drowns any living being within its reach, no matter how far they are from water. Many would carry this artifact to invoke the deity's wrath against mutineers or enemies, treating it with extreme caution as an object of both worship and terror. The Urn is currently held by the Cult of the Drowned, a group of fanatical priests and zealots in the underwater city of Sarnost..

The Cradle of the Abyss
The Cradle of the Abyss is a collection of ancient tomes, each bound in coral and inked with squid ink that shifts and moves as if alive. These tomes are said to contain the secrets of the deep, the implcit knowledge that only Nagaké herself can impart. They are not books that can be read in the traditional sense; their texts are understood through a form of deep meditation that opens the mind to the ocean's endless whispers. Each tome is filled with forbidden truths, insights into the antithesis of knowledge, and methods to commune with entities that exist far beyond mortal comprehension.   Currently, the Cradle is believed to be held by a deep-sea cult, "The Maw’s Children," who claim to safeguard it within a hidden chamber somewhere in the labyrinthine tunnels of the Mother’s Maw. This cult considers themselves the chosen interpreters of Nagaké’s will, deciphering the tomes’ ever-changing scripts through ritualistic trances and sacrifices. Those who seek the Cradle often face more than just the crushing depths; they contend with the madness that comes from reading the dark and inescapable truths within these divine pages.

The Cradle of the Abyss
The Cradle of the Abyss, once believed to be a collection of coral-bound tomes, is now thought to reside within the very heart of the Mother's Maw. Each passage reveals itself only to those who are 'chosen' by Nagaké, the text shifting and reconfiguring in patterns that defy mortal comprehension.   To read from the Cradle is to have the very marrow of the temple whisper its secrets into your soul, drowning you in the abyssal truths that have driven many mad. These writings are believed to be the divine script of Nagaké herself, recording the inexpressible mysteries and impossible knowledge that only the deep knows. The last known pilgrims to decipher the Cradle's markings were deep-sea druids, whose hollow chants and spectral apparitions now haunt the Maw’s corridors, guarding its secrets from unworthy intruders.

The Mother’s Maw
A living, breathing temple built from the skeleton of a giant sea creature, believed to be the favored hunting beast of Nagaké herself. The Maw is an ever-shifting sanctuary, located on a remote island that only appears once every few decades, and it seems to be alive. The bones grind and shift like tectonic plates, and the ocean’s deep waters run through its marrow as if it has veins of its own. Priests who enter the Maw hear the whispers of those who have been lost to the sea, and many enter trances where they claim to speak directly with Nagaké. It is within this shifting, skeletal labyrinth that the Cradle of the Abyss is said to reside, guarded by Nagaké's most devoted followers.   The Maw serves as a nexus of her influence, a place where the boundaries between the mortal realm and her divine domains become imperceptible. The last known entry into the Maw was made by a wandering band of deep-sea druids, seeking answers about the dark omens they had witnessed. None have returned, but their haunting melodies have been heard echoing from the Maw’s depths on moonlit nights..

The Unending Chain
The Unending Chain is a divine construct of infinite length, running along the ocean floor, coiling around the entire world like a serpent of fate. Each link of the chain is inscribed with ancient, unreadable runes that softly glow with a deep, indigo light when submerged. These runes are said to hold the very binding spells that keep the forces of Nagaké’s domains at bay, preventing her vast, unknowable influence from spilling over into the mortal plane in full. A single link breaking would unravel this fragile containment, releasing her horrors and the unseen entities of the deep into the world above.   Many fanatic cults and devotees of Nagaké search tirelessly for a link in the Unending Chain, believing that breaking it will usher in a new era dominated by the ocean and the ineffable. However, others who understand the catastrophic implications seek to protect the Chain, aware that its severance could spell doom for all mortal life. Most have no idea where to begin, as the Unending Chain lies hidden in the darkest, deepest trenches, its path akin to a needle lost in a boundless haystack.

Holy Books & Codes

The Abyssal Hymns

Significance
The "Abyssal Hymns" are the most revered texts among the fanatical followers of Nagaké. Written by the drowned prophetess Nivora Marathel, who claimed to have been visited by Nagaké herself in the depths, these hymns are considered sacred by those who seek to understand and embrace the darkest, most terrifying aspects of the goddess. The Hymns glorify the unknown and the horrors lurking within the ocean's depths, preaching that only through fear and surrender can one truly understand Nagaké's divine plan.
Content
The "Abyssal Hymns" are filled with verses that detail Nagaké's desire to remind mortals of their insignificance and the incomprehensible nature of her dominance. The hymns are a mixture of prayers, chants, and vivid recounts of visions that Nivora received. They speak of the monstrous entities believed to dwell within Nagaké’s domain, warning that they are not only her children but her servants, ready to strike should mortals stray too far from their reverence. Ritualistic sacrifices and symbolic drownings are depicted as pathways to earn Nagaké’s favor, believing that surrendering oneself to the ocean’s depths is to surrender to her divine will.

The Mariner’s Testament

Significance
The "Mariner’s Testament" is the foundational text for followers who perceive Nagaké as a deity of necessity. Written by the wandering sea-monk Altus Peregrine, this text portrays Nagaké not as an entirely vengeful force but as a keeper of the ocean’s. The Testament is widely read among sailors, fishers, and coastal dwellers who rely on Nagaké's goodwill but respect her potential wrath.
Content
The "Mariner’s Testament" is divided into several cantos, each recounting the natural balance that Nagaké maintains over the ocean and its inhabitants. It speaks of the importance of respect, humility, and the acknowledgment of the ocean’s power, emphasizing that Nagaké will not reach to use destruction if she is not first tempted. It contains guidance on making offerings, prayers, and rituals that invoke Nagaké's favor and protection, such as "The Rite of the Safe Voyage" and "The Offering of the Tide." These practices are viewed as acts of respect and equally fear. It preaches that storms are a way for Nagaké cleanse what she views as impurity, that the creatures in the deep are guardians of secrets best left undisturbed, and that the ocean is both giver and taker.

The Deluge of Enlightenment

Significance
"The Deluge of Enlightenment" is a philosophical treatise by the famed aquapriestess Thalassa Draylin, who sought to justify every aspect of Nagaké's actions as ultimately benevolent. This text is embraced by followers who believe that Nagaké's actions, no matter how terrifying, are essential for the greater good. These believers advocate for the goddess’s clear stance in all things, interpreting even her most chaotic deeds as acts of divine wisdom that mortals must strive to comprehend.
Content
The "Deluge of Enlightenment" is written as a series of dialogues between Thalassa Draylin and her disciples, exploring Nagaké’s will as an expression of divine providence. The text argues that Nagaké’s terrifying acts, like drowning ships or unleashing monstrous entities from the deep, are metaphors for cleansing ignorance, teaching humility, and testing the resilience of her followers. Thalassa portrays Nagaké as a goddess who embodies the necessity of hardship for spiritual growth. She outlines several allegorical tales where those who survive Nagaké’s trials emerge wiser and more connected to the natural world. She also presents the idea that what Nagaké does is for the preservation of worldly balance, a concept she calls "The Abyssal Equilibrium," where even the most horrid creatures and events have their purpose in the greater tapestry of existence.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Symbols

The Cresting Wave is the most recognized symbol associated with Nagaké. This image represents both the calm and the ferocity of the ocean. When waves crest in unnatural or unpredictable ways, it is believed to be a direct sign of her intervention. Sailors and travelers often interpret these sudden shifts in the waves as a warning or a call to heed her presence. Those who ignore such warnings frequently find themselves lost at sea, while those who offer a quick prayer or tribute may find their path cleared and the waters calm again.

Bioluminescent Algae Blooms in the ocean's darkest depths are considered manifestations of Nagaké's will. These blooms, glowing an eerie blue-green in the night, are seen as both a sign of her beauty and a harbinger of her hidden dangers. Many believe these glowing algae are messages from Nagaké herself, calling forth those who dare explore her domain to see what lies beneath. When such blooms occur near coastlines or harbors, they are interpreted as Nagaké calling out to the land-dwellers to remember her presence and respect her depths.

The Whispering Tides is a phenomenon where the ocean's waves seem to carry a faint, almost inaudible melody or whisper, often heard at dawn or dusk. For her worshippers, this is believed to be Nagaké speaking directly to those who can hear, imparting messages or warnings that can only be interpreted by those truly attuned to her. Fishermen who hear the whispers often change course or refuse to set sail, believing the messages to be omens of impending danger or safe passage.

Storm-Weathered Driftwood washed ashore during high tide is often seen as a gift from Nagaké. These pieces of driftwood are used in rituals or carved into talismans by her followers. It is believed that the wood, having survived the depths and the storms, carries a fragment of Nagaké’s strength. Driftwood that arrives during particularly violent storms is considered even more potent and is often carved into symbols or statues of Nagaké herself.

The Abyssal Eye is a rare but deeply unsettling symbol associated with Nagaké. This symbol appears in the deep waters, a single, massive eye that seems to watch from beneath the waves, visible only in certain rare conditions or places. The appearance of the Abyssal Eye is believed to be an omen that Nagaké's attention is focused on a specific location or person. It is said to drive those who see it to madness, unable to forget its gaze.

Salt Circles are another common symbol associated with Nagaké, often created by her followers in rituals. These circles of salt are thought to connect the land to her domain, forming protective wards against both physical and spiritual threats. Sailors who prepare for long journeys often draw salt circles around their ships or carry pouches of salt to invoke Nagaké’s protection, believing the salt has been blessed by her essence.

Sigils

The Triton’s Trident is a revered sigil among those who hunt the sea’s creatures or embark on long voyages. This sigil, often tattooed on the bodies of deep-sea hunters and whalers, symbolizes Nagaké's dominion over the creatures of the deep and the unwavering strength of those who dare to venture into her realm. It represents both a plea for her blessing and a mark of respect to the ancient powers that reside beneath the waves.

The Fathomless Maw is a sigil used by cultists and fanatics devoted to the darker aspects of Nagaké’s domain. Depicted as a spiraling void surrounded by jagged teeth, this sigil is carved onto altars, weapons, and ceremonial robes. It represents Nagaké’s insatiable hunger and her power to consume all that falls into her grasp. Followers believe that invoking this sigil grants them a fraction of her abyssal strength, often at a great personal cost.

Elder Chains are a sigil associated with the Unending Chain artifact. The sigil is usually engraved on seastone tablets and found on the armor of Nagaké’s most devout priests and warriors. It represents the binding force that keeps Nagaké’s domains from spilling over into the mortal realm and is believed to offer protection against the chaos and unpredictability of the ocean. Some followers use this sigil in protective wards, believing it will shield them from drowning or being lost at sea.

The Leviathan Scale is a symbol used by those who view Nagaké’s power as both destructive and purifying. Shaped like a single, massive scale of an unknown sea creature, this sigil is often etched into armor, jewelry, or even boats. It represents Nagaké's cleansing fury, and her followers use it to ward off danger or invoke her power in times of crisis. It is a reminder of the balance between life and death that Nagaké embodies.

Wavebreak Glyphs are intricate symbols used by priests and seers to read the ocean's will. These glyphs are drawn on ceremonial garments or inscribed on sacred scrolls, and they serve as a guide for interpreting Nagaké's actions in the mortal realm. The glyphs are often consulted before major events or rituals, helping followers understand whether the goddess is favorable or wrathful towards their endeavors.

Creatures

Zha'Trual
The Zha'Trual is a colossal sea turtle, far beyond the size of any known marine creature, appearing as a massive moving island across the ocean’s vast expanse. Unlike the more fearsome dragon turtles of legend, the Zha'Trual resembles an ordinary sea turtle, but its enormity defies comprehension. Its shell is like a mountain range rising from the waves, covered in moss, barnacles, and corals, creating the illusion of a landmass adrift. It is said to mirror the location of the Mother's Maw, though this is mere speculation. Few have ventured beneath its shell, and even fewer have survived the journey, as it requires swimming over a quarter-mile in depth to recognize the creature for what it is.   The Zha'Trual symbolizes endurance and the incomprehensible vastness of Nagaké’s reach. To encounter the Zha'Trual is believed to be a call to introspection, as if Nagaké herself is challenging the observer to grasp the boundlessness of her domain. Some cultures believe that the Zha'Trual carries with it the souls of those lost at sea, ferrying them across the deep. Worshippers often speak of constructing floating shrines or conducting waterborne rituals in hopes of glimpsing this leviathan, an act considered a blessing and a portent of profound change.

Harphutal
Harphutal, known to many as "The Voice Thief," is a large fish adorned with tree branch-like antlers that glow an eerie aquamarine when it has stolen a voice. Roughly two to three times the size of the average humanoid, these creatures inhabit the deep ocean, where they are both feared and revered by sailors. Harphutals are known to guide the lost back to shore, but the cost for such guidance is steep—one’s voice. To lose your voice to a Harphutal is not to speak no more, but to have your voice taken from you and kept among the echoes of the deep. It is crucial to know their status; a Harphutal with glowing antlers signals that it already holds a voice, marking it safe to address. Should the antlers not glow, speaking to it directly may seal your fate; they may take your voice or drown you to feed their silent hunger.   Despite their reputation, Harphutals are not inherently malicious. They subsist on plankton and seagrass, drifting peacefully unless provoked or addressed improperly. Their unique method of feeding on both marine life and the ephemeral sounds of lost souls makes them a potent symbol of sacrifice and the cost of divine intervention. They are often depicted in the art of Nagaké’s followers as guardians of the ocean’s deepest secrets. Priests of Nagaké use carved replicas of Harphutal antlers in rituals, believing they channel the goddess’s judgment on who is worthy of her favor and who must pay a price.

Vyatlun
Vyatlun, or "The Endless Wanderer," are gargantuan, whale-like leviathans that roam the deepest parts of the oceans, second in size and terror only to the krakens. These creatures instill both fear and awe in those who sail the open waters, for Vyatlun are seen as both the bringers of destruction and bearers of profound wisdom. They exist in various sizes across the oceans, with the largest, known as "Khalath'Zor," traveling a centuries-long circuit around the continent of Kothyica. Sailors say to see Khalath'Zor is to witness a living myth, a creature older than the world itself.   Vyatlun symbolizes the ceaseless power and inevitability of the ocean. Their presence is considered both a dire warning and a sacred event, a reminder of Nagaké's omnipresent strength. Legends tell of fleets that disappear in their wake, pulled into the cold, crushing depths of the ocean. Some devotees see these beasts as Nagaké’s heralds, signs of a test or impending calamity. Sailors often leave offerings to avoid crossing paths with a Vyatlun, hoping their tributes will be enough to pacify these wandering giants.

Korrith
Korrith eerie-eyed creatures with elongated limbs and delicate, almost insectoid bodies. These scavengers of the deep attach themselves to the wrecks of sunken ships, transforming them into elaborate, sprawling homes. They meticulously strip anything that shimmers or glows from their surroundings, delivering these offerings to the hidden temples of Nagaké found deep beneath the ocean waves. Considered sacred among Nagaké’s followers, Korrith are seen as her devoted messengers. To harm a Korrith is to offend Nagaké herself.   Korrith represent devotion, the eternal cycle of taking and giving, and the sacred duty of honoring the goddess. The followers of Nagaké believe that each Korrith plays a crucial role in cleansing the ocean of human greed and pride, bringing them to their divine mistress for judgment. Some stories speak of Korrith crafting strange, bone-chime effigies from the remains of their scavenging, believed to be enchanted oracles of Nagaké's will. This has led to a thriving black market for these effigies, believed by some to hold divine power or ancient wisdom.
