By containing a single shot for a firearm in a casing it allows the user to more efficiently and quickly load and fire. this is not to be confused with the procedure for issuing paper cartridges for muzzle loading muskets, which contain a sufficient powder charge and ball, but must be taken apart in the loading process. These card or metal cartridges are used in conjunction with breach loading firearms.
the sturdy metal, usually brass, cartridges have the advantage as a somewhat skilled tradesmen can, with the correct supplies, reload the cartridge to be used again.

A cartridge is made up of the cartridge case, primer, powder charge, and projectile.
