Abner Wessex was born in London, England and was regarded as a prodigy, studying and earning a PHD in nuclear physics at Cambridge university. During his time as a student, he became politically active as part of the Young Socialists society which influenced him to defect to the Soviet Union.

During this time, Wessex was part of a team investigating and assisting the recovery effort in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine of 1986 and suffered a near fatal dose of radiation during his time there.
