The Remnant Clans

"We were kings, once. This whole land is scattered with the ruins of our handiwork. Some people just forget too easily."
-Belogar Crownstubble, Totemless of Argrad

The Remnant Clans are the last cultural remainders of the ancient Nargrim Empire, and encompass most of Veturoth's dwarven population. Consisting of 12 clans, organized around the totemic Iron Lords of each of the empire's 12 provinces, the Remnant Clans are a pale shadow of the empire that birthed them, but still command a fair amount of manpower and respect throughout Veturoth--particularly in the Dorganr Range. Proud, loyal, and stubborn, the Remnant Clans have waged, and, surprisingly, won many a war since the fall of the Nargrim Empire, and the 12 Holds of Nargrim remain among the very small number of settlements not under the authority of the Vetr jarls.

Naming Traditions

Family names

The only family name a dwarf of the Remnant Clans will have is that of their totem. As a consequence, most people use an acquired nickname/title to distinguish between them and the countless others who bear their clan name. These names tend to be highly descriptive, if somewhat opaque to outsiders or those who don't know a person and their history well.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

For the most part, each clan has its own distinct dialect of Dwarven, but they are all mutually intelligible, and outsiders generally struggle to tell them apart.

Shared customary codes and values

Solidarity, perseverance, hard work, unity, tradition, honor, pride, and hospitality.

Common Etiquette rules

-Treat guests as if they were your own kin--and not the in-laws you don't get along with, for Groki's sake!
-If you are to insult someone, do it with wit or not at all, and take no offense at a clever enough insult.
-Work crews ALWAYS have the right of way. If you like having clear roads and clean water, give them the space they need and lend a hand if you can.
-If someone does you a favor, you should do them an equal one in turn, ideally as soon as practical.
