Fortunate Isles

The Fortunate Isles are an archipelago located off the south coast of Vesperia, just outside of the Gulf of Serpents. Named by sailors who thought that they had found a legendary island chain from Reman myth, the name turned out to be ironic when they found themselves walking right into a four-way war between yuan-ti, tabaxi, [Grung(species)]s, and lizardfolk. The tabaxi welcomed the explorers once it was clear that they were not an immediate threat, but the others were not so hospitable.
These days, sailors mostly avoid all but the eastern islands, where the tabaxi live. Foolhardy adventurers may travel to the other isles, often following rumors of treasure, but they rarely return -- those rumors are spread by the yuan-ti to create a steady trickle of victims for their slave pits and sacrificial altars. Those who visit grung territory can expect to be enslaved as well (though probably not killed), while anyone stupid enough to enter the lizardfolk's domains should pray for a quick death. Only the tabaxi clans are remotely safe to interact with.

Geography

There are thirteen islands of varying size that make up the archipelago, plus many smaller islets along their edges.
  • The largest island is B'alam in the east. It features one of the three volcanos in the isles, Melora's Fang, which is very old and mostly dormant. This island is where most of the tabaxi clans dwell.
  • Four small islands surround B'alam on the south and east. To the south is K'usillu, an elongated island inhabited by the Silver Fish clan. East is the bean-shaped isle of Na'alo, home to the Sleeping Trees clan. A bit further east are three mostly uninhabited islands known as the Three Brothers: Bituru, Tulo, and Anka. The tabaxi rarely take their boats out that far, but these islands are used as an occasional meeting place when they talk with the locathah who live nearby in the Gulf.
  • The second-biggest island is Amaru, also the westernmost, where the yuan-ti live. Their settlements are scattered all around, but the biggest is cut directly into the slope of the volcano.
  • Between Amaru and Qaraywa, the island of Kapowai is a yuan-ti outpost that endures regular retaliatory attacks from the lizardfolk and grungs.
  • In the north-center of the archipelago lies Qaraywa, third largest of the islands and home to the third volcano. This island is dominated by lizardfolk, who react violently to any intruders on their land due to multiple grung and yuan-ti raids. The neighboring islands off the west coast of Qaraywa, Aayin and Honu, are also lizardfolk possessions, but sparsely populated due to yuan-ti attacks from the south.
  • The two south-central islands, Kaira and Jamp'atu, are grung territory.

Ecosystem

The Fortunate Isles are covered in lush tropical rainforest and surrounded by the bountiful waters of the Gulf of Serpents. They are home to diverse animal and plant life, including a few species of dinosaur.
