About one kilometer off the Western edge of Kovura floats a lonely little island, upon which stands a castle-like fortress, its walls built along the very edge leaving no flat ground beyond it. The Scarlet Fortress houses the most dangerous criminals sentenced to death for crimes commited with the use of advanced magic.
It is formally known as vel'Desera Castle for the name of its designer.
Inmates are delivered no less than three days following their sentencing, escorted by four guards on a small, specially built airship meant only for back-and-forth trips to the island. Once docked, they are led in to be processed.
Special magic users are necessary to make sure they are of no significant magical threat from the day they are detained; well-trained Soulmenders are capable of introducing their own magical energy to one's Soul in order to disrupt magical activity. This can be effective for as long as a few days, but especially erratic inmates may need to be retreated daily.

The Castle has a maximum occupancy of 288 inmates, but the most ever detained at once was 213. 144 guards stand watch across the Castle at all times, meaning that even at full capacity, there would be one guard per two inmates.Inmates are delivered no less than three days following their sentencing, escorted by four guards on a small, specially built airship meant only for back-and-forth trips to the island. Execution
Prisoners sent to the Scarlet Fortress are typically sentenced to a period of incarceration before their execution, usually two weeks for authorities to settle paperwork. Executions are performed in the central courtyard of the castle during First Night in groups as large as six. Executioners are similarly skilled Soulmenders, trained in direct manipulation of other's Souls. The Soul is forcefully manifested and withdrawn from the inmate's back, where it can be more easily affected by magic and destroyed. It's thought to be the most humane form of magic execution, with only slight discomfort from the manifestation of the Soul. Upon the death of the Soul, it immediately scatters into a deep scarlet dust.XXI
