Dragon's Egg

History

An old children's game, played with a common deck of Dragon Cards.

Components and tools

This game only requires a standard Dragon Deck of cards. A Dragon Deck has numbers 1 through 10 in 4 different suits (Earth, Water, Fire, and Lightning), along with 4 dragon cards. There is an additional Egg/Hoard card which is used for the this game, but is optional in many other card games.   This game can be played with a Modified Tarroka Deck, with Swords being Earth, Stars being Lightning, Coins being Fire, and Glyphs being Water. The Masters of each suit are considered as 10s. The 4 dragons are represented by the Beast, Darklord, Horseman, and Executioner, and the egg is represented with the Artifact.

Observance

Playing the game is fairly simple. The deck is shuffled and then dealt to every player. Each player picks up their hand of cards and the player with the 10 of Fire (Master of Coins) goes first. After tossing down the 10 of Fire (Master of Coins) that player's turn is over and play passes to the left.   The goal of the game is to empty your hand first, becoming the Dragon for the next round. On your turn you can either pass or play cards. Cards must be of the same number or lower of the current card and of a same or higher quantity. If you possess the cards to complete the set of 4 elements with the number currently on top of the pile, you can play that on any turn to clear the pile. Once a pile has been cleared, the person who cleared it starts off by playing any quantity of a number that they have in their hand and play continues from them. If on your turn you play cards and everyone after you passes, the pile clears before you can play again.   The Dragons (Beast, Darklord, Horseman, and Executioner) can only be played on your turn, but they automatically clear the pile. Dragons (Beast, Darklord, Horseman, and Executioner) cannot be used to start a new pile and cannot be played on an empty pile. Instead, you will have to pass if you cannot start a pile, letting the next player start the pile. The Egg/Hoard (Artifact) is not playable. You cannot play it on anything and you cannot start a new pile with it. Instead, you can pass it to the next player if you manage to clear a through any means.   As soon as you play the last card in your hand, you are out of the game and cannot be passed the Egg/Hoard (Artifact). The first player to accomplish this is named as The Dragon. Play continues until everyone has cleared their hands, except for the person who will then be stuck with the Egg/Hoard (Artifact).   On subsequent rounds, The Dragon is allowed to exact a tribute from the person who ended up with the Egg/Hoard (Artifact). The Dragon is allowed to ask for up to 2 cards from them, which they have to give if they have it. The Dragon, however, has to provide 1 card in return for each card that it takes. The Dragon then starts off the round with a single card of the highest card in their hand).
