Cuzera and her Hunting Beast

Summary

This myth describes how Cuzera (the Faleran Goddess of the Hunt) acquired her hunting animal.   The story generally begins by describing the nature of the beast as it terrorizes villages in some rural area. It walks on six legs and has stone feathers instead of fur. Its most terrifying trait, however, is how its breath can cause any creature that breaths it to enter a waking nightmare, lost in a shifting landscape.   Cuzera, being out on a hunt, comes across the beast. She doesn't know what it is and approaches it. The beast is afraid of her, knowing her reputation, so it cleverly waits for her to approach before dousing her with its enchanting breath and running away. Cuzera eventually recovers and seeks out a nearby village to find out more information about the beast.   She arrives to find the nearest village in a terrible state, with several villagers seemingly mad. She hears about the creature from some villagers who explain how its enchanted breath and feathers make it impossible for them to slay. Cuzera declares that her weapons will be able to easily break the beast's feathers and sets off to hunt the beast, despite warnings from the villagers.   After days on the beast's trail, Cuzera manages to sneak up on it and prepares an ambush. However, her attack is blocked by the beast's stone feathers and she is nearly hunted in turn.   Humbled, Cuzera returns to the village to request their help hunting the beast. They set up a trap in the village to topple tree trunks onto the beast and shatter its stone feathers. When the beast next came to hunt in the village, they enact the plan and Cuzera wrestles the beast to the ground.   After this fight, she decides to take the beast as a companion and it chooses to follow her.

Historical Basis

While it is unlikely Cuzera ever personally descended for this, it is possible that there was a mortal huntress who went through a similar situation. The story of the events likely claimed that the woman channeled the powers of Cuzera, before morphing to saying that she was an incarnation of Cuzera and eventually that she was Cuzera, forgetting the original woman.
