Culture and cultural heritage
The people of Midgard are separated into three social classes Jarls, Karls, and Thralls.
Thralls are the lowest ranking class and are slaves.
Karls are free peasants. They own farms, land and cattle and engage in daily chores like ploughing the fields, milking the cattle, building houses and wagons, but use thralls to make ends meet.
The Jarls are the aristocracy of the Midgardian society. They are wealthy and own large estates with huge longhouses, horses and many thralls.
Common Dress code
Jarls are well groomed with neat hairstyles. They express their wealth by wearing expensive clothes (often silk and fur) and well crafted jewelry.
Karls express similar tastes in clothing and hygiene, but in a more casual and inexpensive way.
Art & Architecture
Geometric interwoven patterns of beasts are carved into jewelry, weapons, armor, stone walls and wooden supports, as well as stitched into clothing.
Coming of Age Rites
In many Midgardian societies one is not considered an adult until they have fought their first battle. It is common for a young man or woman to set out on a hunt for a vicious beast or participate in a local fighting match to prove their adulthood.
Funerary and Memorial customs
There are two ways that midgardians honor their dead. For settlements along the coast, a burial at sea was most proper. Friends and family would place the body along with any tributes on a sailing vessel (the more status the person had in life the larger the vessel). The vessel would then be set ablaze and sent out to sea. For settlements farther inland, a burial mound was just as acceptable. Like the ships these mounds are filled with worldly possessions that are offered as tribute. The mound is then marked with a rune stone that tells the story of the one buried beneath.
Common Taboos
It is considered a great sin to slay someone who is unarmed and defenseless. to do so is punishable by being sent into the mountains unarmed with only one days worth of rations. This is normally a death sentence, for if hunger does not take you, the giants surly will.
Common Myths and Legends
The story of Marhault the Lord of battle are often told around the fire among the people of Midgard. The people tell tales of the days when he walked the land as a mortal fighting against the minions of his rival, the giant Skjeld "the crown breaker".
