Aetrium steel

An ornate weapon rack on the wall displays one of the most beautiful swords you have ever seen. The hilt is fashioned in the shape of an eagle with its spreading wings serving as the cross guard. The true eye catcher however is the blade itself. A rippling pattern dances across the length of the sword resembling water flowing in a stream, and the edge is so sharp you feel it could cut you just by looking at it. "You like that don't you!" Theo exclaims. "I know you do. I can see it in your eyes. That there is 100% pure Aetrium steel. Forged by the master smith Reirgim Wyvernbrand himself. He only forged four swords like it, and this one somehow made it into my shop. The sword is so sharp it can cut a hair falling across the blade. Watch!" He plucks a hair off his head and lets it fall above the sword. As it gently floats downward the lightest touch against the blade is enough to split it in two.

History & Usage

History

When Reirgim Wyvernbrand forged his first Aetrium steel blade, the kingdoms of northern Aetrus went up in arms trying to hire the smith to work for them over the other kingdoms. Reirgim knew that no matter who he sold his blades to it would tip the scales of balance, and so he instead went into hiding taking his secret with him. Many years later the organization known as the Aetrium Brotherhood came to light claiming to know the secret to forge Atrium steel. Weather or not they have any relation to the original master Reirgim Wyvernbrand is unknown but they have kept his tradition of staying hidden and remaining neutral in all conflicts.

Discovery

The technique of forging Aetrium steel was first discovered by a dwarf named Reirgim Wyvernbrand. How he discovered it is known only to those trusted within the inner circle of the Atrium Brotherhood.

Refinement

The process of forging iron into Aetrium steel is an exact and complex art, that is well guarded by the few elite blacksmiths who have mastered it. It is an arduous process that involves precise environmental conditions and advanced folding techniques.

Trade & Market

The smiths who have mastered this skill only make blades on request, and only to a reputable source with the gold to fund the project. These luxury items are often given as gifts to nobility, and warriors of great renown or purchased for Admirals and Generals.
