Aedreth Settlers

Some time ago a group of explorers set sail from Kelm in search of new lands. They came across the savage and untamed continent of Aedreth. Upon arriving in these new lands they quickly discovered how dangerous it was with giant lizards wandering freely. The locals were not very friendly either. Eventually the settlers came across an ancient ruin that made its way underground. They discovered a massive underground network of cities left behind by some long forgotten civilization. The settlers adopted the cities calling them "bunker towns" and set to work on reverse engineering the gadgets left behind. So far their biggest success was the discovery of black powder.   Gunslinger: All settlers are proficient with pistols and treat all other firearms as martial weapons.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The settlers speak a dialect of common mixed with a bit of dwarven and gnomish slang.

Culture and cultural heritage

The settlers are a mixture of Humans, Dwarfs, and Gnomes who came together in the name of exploration and discovery. They consider themselves a free people, set apart from the laws of their homelands. For the most part this lack of any written law seems to work out for them as they work together for the betterment of all. However there are those who take advantage of this free society, simply taking what they want from those without the means to defend themselves.

Shared customary codes and values

The settlers have a very loose set of laws, and not much man power to back them up. They spend much of their time simply trying to make a decent living. For this reason the common folk often look to vigilantism and gunfights to solve any problems the law cant handle.

Average technological level

Black powder is a common commodity among the settlers that is sometimes worth more to them than gold. It is common that settlers pay in bullets rather than gold pieces. The term "a shot of Whisky" comes from someone paying for as much whisky as one shot would buy them. Aside from black powder the settlers utilize other technology left behind in the bunkertowns. Not all of which they understand but it seems to work well enough on its own. One such machine is known as the express way. An ancient railway system that runs in a perpetual motion stopping only for a few minutes at each bunker before continuing its journey to the next. No one knows how or why this train system still works but they use it as a quick and easy way to get from place to place.

Common Etiquette rules

Settlers often rely on the kindness of strangers. Constantly traveling between bunkertowns, when a settler sees a fellow traveler they are quick to offer a seat by the fire.

Common Dress code

The underground tunnels that connect the bunkertowns are dusty and desolate. Travelers wear wide brimmed hats and bandannas to keep the dust out of their face, and long leather coats known as "Dusters" to protect their outfits.   Shirts are often elaborately decorated with piping, embroidered roses and a contrasting yoke.   Denim overalls became popular among miners for their inexpensive construction and breathability.

Art & Architecture

The art portrayed by the settlers is more of a documentation of their findings. Artists prefer to draw sketches of indigenous creatures, or paint landscapes of places they have seen on Aedreth.

Funerary and Memorial customs

After a few years of living underground the settlers decided that it seemed strange to continue burying their dead. On the other hand burning them was out of the question as the fumes would have no place to go and would thus pollute the air. Instead the settlers decided to put more of the ancient tech to work. They found that some of the bunkertowns were equipped with one of two devices. One is something like an incinerator that leaves no fumes behind. It would turn the bodies to ash allowing loved ones to do as they wished with the remains. Another facility works more like a cold storage chamber where bodies are placed in glass tubes that emanate a supernatural cold, keeping the bodies in pristine condition.

Common Taboos

With their lax set of laws, it is difficult to draw the line between upright citizen and the dregs of society. One is considered an outlaw if they do anything to the detriment of society as a whole.

Common Myths and Legends

Legends tell of a lone rider dressed all in white on a white horse, who rides across the land to help out the common folk. No one knows his name or has ever seen his face. He is known simply as "The Pale Rider".
