Construct overview

Constructs are a group of magical creatures that have varying elements of artificially created or tampered life. There are currently four categories of constructs known: golems, which are soldiers or workers made from earthen material given life by a mysterious fluid refined from deposits found deep underground. Revenants, which are the souls of those who once lived imbued into a core that controls an otherwise inanimate object to act as its new vessel. Artifice, which are either tools or items that act as an extension of a singular beings will and can be controlled with the mind. And chimeras, an already living creature that has been modified to varying extents either medically or alchemically, though usually both with the goal to incorporate features of other creatures.   Constructs are not considered as a universal force and are instead a form of classification employed by arcanists to organise currently known magics into categories, though the list of constructs is limited it has effectively changed over time as constructs such as chimeras are a relatively recent discovery. A construct is generally recognised as life that would not otherwise exist without the will of another creature interfering with the natural order of life. They are often regarded as monstrosities to the general populace of most civilisations, especially those who are unfamiliar with magic. This can be attributed to their intimidating features and prior historical happenings. Though most constructs will lack the ability to think critically or feel emotion they are not all mindless and while a majority are bound to the will of another, usually their creator, some constructs have either escaped their captivity or were created to be independent though these individuals are incredibly rare.   All arcanists are capable of creating all constructs. They are not bound to one specific type of magic though, depending on the construct, the type of magic used to create one can impart noticeable differences in the final product. This is seen with the type of magic used to create the various cores for revenants, these details are often quite minute however. Depending on the type of construct the frequency of their existence is quite low. The most common of all constructs found would be the artifice whereas the rarest would either be chimeras or revenants as they are both very difficult to create in their own rights. This is further amplified by the secrecy involved in constructs, as unliving creatures with mobility they hold a reputation in Verdance as terrifying creatures. And while some constructs fulfill this visage others are mundane and even peaceful.   There are many reasons one may create a construct, ranging from power to companionship though the most frequent reason is for quality of life. A construct can be used to perform activities that are too dangerous or are simply better performed without a humanoid creature involved. Artifice can levitate objects so you do not need to hold them, golems and chimeras can act as workers or soldiers and revenants can act as a new body for those who may desire one. The applications and potential uses of constructs are still being explored to the current day. This is even despite the more recent endeavors to hide and even destroy knowledge of producing constructs. As they are potentially incredibly powerful the means of creating and utilising a construct is invaluable as such kingdoms and empires will often invest large amounts of resources and effort into ensuring their constructs are as capable as possible.

I really like your article on constructs, especially the motivations behind creating one, it would be fascinating to explore the motivations behind creating constructs more and how they could be used, for both good and bad.

Thanks, you'll be able to see a few constructs in my up and coming novel which I plan on releasing this year. In the meantime you can read my short story 'floor 37' which is about chimeras specifically. :)
