The Hive

The Necrotera hive consists of a large main chamber at the center of the mountain, surrounded by smaller chambers nearer to the exterior of the mountain. The main chamber houses the queen and is the main social quarters for the hive. Off to one side sits the The Queen on a large pile of bones and rotting flesh where she lays her eggs to be transported by the workers to fresher corpses for implantation to allow them to grow. The walls of the chamber rise about 40 feet high and are made up of incubation cells where the eggs, once placed inside a body, can grow safely. There is a network of tunnels that lead away from the main chamber. Some lead out of the mountain into fresh air, some lead to rot farms within the mountain where workers use raw flesh to farm fungi that they use as a main supply of food, and others lead to cave systems just below the surface where scouts and workers will relay messages from the queen to the church leaders. One such passage leads to a cave that has been blocked off by large boulders. On the other side of the boulders, the cave leads directly to the church. This is the sacrificial grounds where the humans leave their dead to be transported to the afterlife. Once the living humans have left, the Necrotera move the rocks and claim the corpse to be placed on the walls of the main chamber.
