Nyactalus (nI-AK-tu-lus)
The Nyactalus are a species of large mammalian bats that live in the forests north of Flathead lake, beyond mount Niatnoum. A male nyactalus will reach a wingspan of around 20 feet and females can reach around 12 feet. The bats live in small colonies of around 6 and dwell in the high treetops around the mountains. Every lunar cycle, the nyactalus emerge from the trees and begin to hunt and feast before retreating to the forest for another month. The main prey of the nyactalus is the necrotera that live in the surrounding areas, though it has been said that they eat a number of other organisms, including goats, cows, and humans.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Long slender arms that are connected to their bodies and short hind legs by thin webbing to allow flight. The short fur is dark brown after molting in the warmer months, later changing to red-brown before hibernation. When awake, the body temperature is 36.5 °C but decreases significantly during the inactivity of the animal.
Ecology and Habitats
Large trees and heavily forested areas where they can roost for weeks on end.
Additional Information
Domestication
Inconclusive, attempts lead to imminent death
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Largely echolocation based. The sound-based mechanisms of their prefrontal cortex gives them immunity to the necroteras telepathic disorientation techniques
