History
Father Donavich was born in the dread plane of Barovia ruled by Count Strahd von Zarovich. He became a priest of the Morninglord in the village of Barovia. Sometime in his 30s he had a son named Doru to an unnamed mother. Over his tenure of working for his church, fewer and fewer people would come to his church until eventually only a handful of people would attend his sermons. Sometimes he was completely alone. In 1498 AN, Father Donavich's son was attacked by a vampire while exploring the woods of Barovia. As a result, Doru became infected and would soon become a vampire spawn. Not watning to kill his only child, Donavich instead locked him away in the cellar of the church where he conducted business. He was ashamed of the state his son came to be in as Doru slowly wasted away without any food to sustain him but as a vampire spawn he did not die. When adventurers arrived in Barovia in 1499 AN, they came to his church to request his services in the funeral of the burgomaster who passed the week prior. He agreed to help if they assisted him in taking care of his son. The adventurers would descend into his basement and kill Doru, freeing him from his torment. Donovich would assist the adventurers but enter a deep depression afterwards, eventually closing the church for good.
Alternate Barovia
In the alternate Barovia, created after the original returned to the material plane, Donovich's story began almost identically to his original counterpart. There were stark differences upon Doru's transformation, however. Donovich did not leave him to starve and would instead bring animals for him to feat upon. Eventually that was not enough and the priest would debase himself into killing a member of his church and feeding them do his undead child. When the adventurers arrived, Donovich made the same request of having them kill his son. As they descended into the basement however, Donovich would have other plans. The sins he had committed to keep his son alive weighed heavily on him and as his son was hunted and killed he ascended to the bell tower of his church and hung himself on the same bell. Upon Doru's death, the adventurers heard the bell ring and discovered his dead body when they returned to the church.
