Velo

After a galactic event rained meteors of concentrated dark energy into the Earth's atmosphere, Earth's environments, lifeforms, and place in the universe were forever changed. It was the 6th extinction level event in Earth's history, and thusly marks the dawning of The Seventh Age of the world. Gone was the age of men, like the dinosaurs before them. Now was the age of the phantoms.   Velo means "Veil", and is indicative to the themes and stories that take place on these lands. After "The Veiling" as the event has come to be known, dark energy, or quintessence, radiates throughout the land. Life itself has adapted around it.   Those that rose from the ashes of humanity evolved to not only survive the quintessence but to feed off of it. It empowered them with strength and ability unrivaled in history - but at a price. Each usage of the power incurs corruption on the host, and the purest warrior can be turned to an unrecognizable horrors should the corruption grow too great. This also came with an innate hunger for more energy they all shared, though some more than others. Much of their effort is spent managing this hunger, and mastering the gifts it brings. These evolved humans would be known as Phantoms. They are not the lone species to evolve to unseen heights in the wake of The Veiling.   In the centuries following The Veiling, war has defined borders and alliances have been made, though society has remained tribalistic. Much of the land is yet to be cultivated, and quintessence is only barely understood. Who knows what lurks beyond the Veil of Darkness...
