Kagun

The Deceiving Shades

The Kagun
Are an ancient race of formless shadow beings, born in a dark world with a powerful ability to hide anywhere where shadows lie. Current day Kagun have no idea of where they came from, but the stories from their ancestors described their home-world as a dark and dangerous place. Though the Kagun are hunted by the other races, they are able to hide from persecution by solidifying their form to look like one of the other humanoid races.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Kagun are, in their normal form, a sentient dark fog. In this form, they are contently changing shape to fit their needs. To hide themselves from others who wish them harm, they can change their form, condensing their form into a more solid humanoid form. Though their outside is disguised, they don't seem to have the same mass as a normal person. And if they are to take damage, they will either partially or fully lose solid form.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kagun mating is odd, to say the least. It's nearly impossible to tell the genders of kagun apart. And it is believed that they might not even reproduce.   In reality, the Kagun are genderless with each Kagun being amorphous, able to change their shape at will. The actual process of "mating" involves two kagun melding their amorphous form together. When this process is completed (taking around 3 minutes) a third small amorphous form is made.

Growth Rate & Stages

For the first two days of a Kagun's life, they will lack the ability to mask its natural form, making it exceedingly difficult for Kagun to raise their young in highly populated arias. By the end of this two-day gap, the "baby" will have been fully developed physically. Mentally, they remain in infancy for about a year, using the knowledge passed down by their parents to create their own personality. Throughout the next century, the Kagun will not visually age until they live to be about 120 years old. At this point, they will start to slowly lose their ability to freely morph. During this time they experience something akin to Alzheimer's where they slowly forget everything and fade into an inanimate black fog that is soon swept away into the wind.

Ecology and Habitats

Most people would assume that the Kagun's optimal environment would be the Shadelands from whence they came. This, however, couldn't be farther from the truth. The Shadelands are a plain of mentally degrading shades that rob the sentience from a Kagun. To be forthright, due to the other races want to get rid of them, there is no safe place for the Kagun to live aside from isolation.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Though it's hard to picture, Kagun do eat food. In their normal forms, they can break down food in a matter of seconds when it is enveloped by their Veil. This matter is broken down into mana. Due to the fact that they live off of mana, Kagun can live indefinitely near lay-lines and other places of mana concentration, as they can absorb ambient mana to sustain themselves.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

In their normal shade form, a kagun can only see in grayscale, feel the energy differences in the air, and smell things faintly. In contrast, when a Kagun condenses their form into a disguise, they gain all the normal sensory abilities of a normal person.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The naming conventions of the Kagun vary greatly depending on where they live, opting to stick to a name that will help them blend in with the surrounding society. however, outside of civilization, a Kagun's name is not given it is earned through the rite of traversing the Shadelands where they will learn where the Kagun came from. names originating from this ritual tend to be almost Fey or imp in nature like Oberon or Druzil.

Change Appearance

As an action, you can transform your appearance or revert to your natural form. You can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature you’ve never seen, and you revert to your natural form if you die.   You decide what you look like, including your height, weight, facial features, the sound of your voice, coloration, hair length, sex, and any other distinguishing characteristics. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change. You cannot use this ability to become anything non humanoid. Your clothing and other equipment don’t change in appearance, size, or shape to match your new form, requiring you to keep a few extra outfits on hand to make the most compelling disguise possible.   Even to the most astute observers, your ruse is usually indiscernible. If you rouse suspicion, or if a wary creature suspects something is amiss, you have advantage on any Charisma (Deception) check you make to avoid detection.

Void-Forged Instincts

You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Deception, Intimidation, Insight, and Persuasion.

Unsettling Visage

When a creature you can see makes an attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the roll. You must use this feature before knowing whether the attack hits or misses.   Using this trait reveals your shapeshifting nature to any creature within 30 feet that can see you. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Divergent Persona

You gain proficiency with one tool of your choice. Define a unique identity associated with that proficiency; establish the name, race, gender, age, and other details. While you are in the form of this persona, the related proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses that proficiency.
