Armor and Weapon Upgrades
Not all weapons and armors are created equal. Some talented weapon smiths and armorers can, with extra time, effort, and coin, produce weapons and armor of higher quality typically to order.
Example: a bludgeon-resistant gambeson worn under a breastplate will still reduce damage taken from bludgeoning attacks. An SR III chain shirt and an SR III brigandine set, when worn together, only reduces the damage taken from slashing attacks by 3. However, a BR II gambeson and an SR II chain shirt will reduce bludgeoning damage by 2, and slashing damage by 2. A pierce-resistant chain shirt that has been extended into a full suit of chain mail will not provide damage reduction - the entire suit must be upgraded, but the upgrade cost will be reduced by an amount equal to the upgrade cost of the chain shirt.
UPGRADE TYPES Bludgeon-resistant (BR I/II/III) armor reduces the damage taken from non-magical attacks that deal bludgeoning damage. Bludgeon-resistant armor generally involves more padding and superior quilting techniques that provides a better cushion against crushing blunt force trauma. Only gambesons and hide armor can be made bludgeon-resistant. Pierce-resistant (PR I/II/III) armor reduces the damage taken from non-magical attacks that deal piercing damage. Pierce-resistant armor generally involves thicker armor plating or the reduction of vulnerable openings where a stab from a sword or an arrow can do harm. Gambesons and hide armors cannot be made pierce-resistant, and leather can only be treated and reinforced to a point. Slash-resistant (SR I/II/III) armor reduces the damage taken from non-magical attacks that deal slashing damage. Slash-resistant armor generally involves harder, more durable materials being used, or the integration of chain mail/plating in vital areas on lighter armors which can stop a blade from cutting in. Gambesons and hide armors cannot be made slash-resistant (except for jack chain), and leather can only be treated and reinforced to a point. UPGRADE PRICES
SUCCESSIVE TIERS
When upgrading an armor to a higher "tier" of protection (such as PR I to PR II) the cost of the next upgrade is reduced by an amount equal to the cost of the previous upgrade.
COMPOSITE ARMORS
When upgrading an armor set that includes other armors (e.x. a brigandine and a chain shirt), the total price can be reduced by an amount equal to the price of the armor plus the price of any upgrades, so long as the tier and damage reduction type of the component armor is the same.
Additionally, when purchasing a complete "set" of armor made up of more than one additional component (lamellar, plate), each individual component is considered upgraded at the same tier and damage reduction (if the armor component cannot normally be upgraded, then it is not considered upgraded). However, a character cannot receive the damage reduction benefits of a composite armor set unless the components are all of the same upgrade tier (except for gambesons), and at least one piece is of the same tier and damage resistance type.
Example: a character owns a PR II chain shirt, and wishes to have a PR II brigandine made. The original total price of the PR II brigandine is 650gp (400gp base price + 250 upgrade price), but the PR II chain shirt allows for the price to be reduced to 480gp. A character owns a PR I chain shirt, and wishes to have a PR II brigandine made. The price of the brigandine is unaffected. However, if a character spends 50gp on upgrading the chainshirt to PR II, then they can reduce the price of the PR II brigandine to 480gp. A character has purchased an entire set of PR III plate armor. If they choose to strip down to chain mail, they still retain the protection against piercing damage, and are left with a PR III breastplate, a gambeson, and PR III plate armor remains. However, if a character with an SR III breastplate, a gambeson, and PR II chainmail attempts to wear the plate armor remains, they do not receive the piercing-resistant benefits of the full set of plate armor, but instead are considered to have SR III and PR II protection with 18 AC. But a character with an SR III breastplate, a gambeson, and PR III chainmail attempting to wear the armor will receive the benefits of the plate armor set, with SR III, BR III, and PR III protection with 18 AC.
WEAPONS
Weapons and ammunition capable of dealing "magical" damage are extremely rare in the world, and cannot be crafted in the same way as other weapons. However, non-magical weapons with bonuses to their attack and damage rolls can be produced by specialized weapon smiths. These weapons might be made of higher quality steel, be made sharper, balanced and weighted to better suit the wielder, or otherwise enhanced in some way. However, some extremely simple weapons such as clubs cannot be enhanced. A non-magical +1 upgrade costs additional gp equal to double the weapon's base price plus 10gp. A non-magical +2 upgrade costs additional gp equal to double the weapon's base price plus 30gp.Weapon | +1 upgrade cost | +2 upgrade cost |

ARMOR
Many skilled armorers have been able to design techniques for enhancing the protective qualities of some armors. Armors can be upgraded to reduce the damage taken from a certain type of attack, with a maximum of a -3 damage reduction. Damage reduction from armor upgrades can reduce damage taken to a minimum of 1. Armor which is still physically worn as a component of another armor piece still retains the damage reduction. Multiple instances of the same type of damage reduction to not stack.Example: a bludgeon-resistant gambeson worn under a breastplate will still reduce damage taken from bludgeoning attacks. An SR III chain shirt and an SR III brigandine set, when worn together, only reduces the damage taken from slashing attacks by 3. However, a BR II gambeson and an SR II chain shirt will reduce bludgeoning damage by 2, and slashing damage by 2.
