House Edricson

This House rules over Roeswerp, a town in the Thundering Flats of the Iron Empire. Their banner is split vertically down the middle, half of purple and half of copper. The device is three blue stones over a green laurel wreath. An alternative version is a column of three blue stones on a banner purple and copper.

DRAMATIS PERSONAE

Lord Aethelrin Edricson. Lord of Roeswerp and leader of House Edricson. As is his right as the head of Edricson, Lord Aethelrin possesses the Sanitem Lapis, passed down through generations since the Burning War. Named after the Song of Aethelrin.

  • Gloria Edricson, Aethelrin's wife. Originally of House Walmar.
Lady Calantha Edricson. Older sister of Lord Aethelrin Edricson. Lady Calantha married Sir Xander Fenn, a cousin of the ruling line of House Fenn. Unfortunately, shortly after their marriage, Sir Xander answered the summons of aid from Great House Sentel to fight in the Taint of Devotion, and he subsequently lost his life in the Battle of Blood. • Sir Ludovicus the Bloodreaver, forced to betroth to Lady Jenifire Vaele. Nephew of Lord Aethelrin Edricson and son of Sir Xander and Lady Calantha. Sir Ludovicus earned the title of Bloodreaver from his renowned skill with a sword. He carves through his enemies, splashing blood across the battlefield in wide arcs of his powerful swings. He collects the blood of his enemies, plundering from their bodies, and holding them as trophies often adorning his frame. His bloodstained armor holds quite a remarkable image. Many rumor that Sir Ludovicus is also a Soulomancer, or works with Soulomancers, who utilize Air magic through using blood as a component. This might be why Ludovicus' swings are able to cut through the air with no resistance, and his strikes seem to sing through the air.
  • Aroris Edricson, niece of Lord Aethelrin and daughter of Sir Xander and Lady Calantha. Aroris is betrothed to Sir Thoss Walmar.
Harper Edricson, a noble lady known for her beauty. married to Bertram the Pallid of House Valtoria. Cousin of Lord Aethelrin and Lady Calantha.
  • Aethel Edricson, Harper's younger sister.

Sir Edric the Humble. Grew up in Old Iron alongside House Mallus. The bastard of a Witness of the Iron Creed. Sir Edric would make a name for himself during the Burning War, where his name would be forged in history.

Culture

All members of House Edricson are named after people or events from the Hallowed Writ. The naming convention of this House reflects what they value, and who they intrinsically are. House Edricson follows the Hallowed Writ to the letter and never deviates. While all studied men and women of the Iron Empire know the Hallowed Writ, and are taught its passages, House Edricson are forced to memorize it in its entirety. Any member of House Edricson must prove their devotion to the Writ by reciting it fully upon becoming an adult, otherwise they are banished from Roeswerp to die a truly dishonorable death at the claws of a Lost, so that their tainted soul will never know the bliss of the Burn.

History

The town of Roeswerp holds its name from long ago, toward the end of the Blood Age. In Old Sacrim it roughly translates to: The water of life, or the idiom Droplets make up a waterfall. Historians believe that this idiom may have refered to dew, the condensation of water usually found on leaves, and to the idea that without the small, the big cannot exist. A waterfall is made up of millions of droplets of water, and the Empire is made up of millions of small, individual people. The small crop of hills that would later become Roeswerp appears in the Hallowed Writ, so when the Thundering Flats were re-settled, the newly founded House Edricson sought out the holy place to build a town in.
But before House Edricson was formed, there only existed Sir Edric the Humble. He was the son of an ashamed Witness of the Iron Creed, who had forsaken his oath and slept with a woman, fathering a child. The Witness was of noble blood, a Mallus with Glore blood in him. Because of this, he was allowed to stay within the Creed, and pass Edric on to the distant island of Old Iron to be raised. House Mallus and the island were a shadow of what they were since the eruption of Mount Ferrum, but members of House Mallus were still nobles under the protection of the Iron Kingdom, and Edric grew up comfortably. But, he grew up ashamed of his blood. He found himself infatuated with the Hallowed Writ, seeing it as a fount of uncapped potential and wisdom. He devoted himself wholeheartedly towards study of the Writ, and many expected him to become a Witness as he grew, but Edric steered towards the chivalric training of Knights. He forged the two paths together to become a renowned knight of religious zeal that earned him the title of 'The Humble'.
Sir Edric spent his early adulthood traveling across the Iron Kingdom, spreading the word of his faith and preaching to those that may have strayed from the path. The Witnesses of the Iron Creed lacked familiarity, the personal, humane touch that Edric possessed, and he garnered a large following of likewise religious folk. Notably, Edric did not use a sword like most knights, but equipped himself with a long lance at all times, that he somehow mastered using at all kinds of combat. Whenever questioned about this, he would recite the Writ, saying that it is the greatest sin to kill with blood on your hands, for that is why Ethos created the Soul Logic. One of Edric's favorite quotes from the Writ was:
"And the followers of the Iron Creed looked upon the Burn and saw their salvation. And they knew that, in death, they would ascend to the Burn and be cleansed of all sin." "And Veler spoke to the people, saying: 'Believe in the Burn, and you shall be saved. Trust in Ethos, and you shall have eternal life.'"
From Ferrum Lexis - The Hallowed Writ
This would always inspire hope and trust in his bannermen and himself, and would make the knights unafraid to die.
When the Burning War started, Edric saw the conquest as a ways of bringing the faith to other, sinful people who needed it the most. He fought in great battles such as the Battle for Blood Mountain, but it is Alaric's Ambush that saw Edric's name carved into history. He led a large group of between two-and-three hundred loyal Glore bannermen through the Highland landscape alongside the rest of the Iron army, but was separated in a great blizzard. A group of Highlanders, led by Alaric the Bear-Priest, happened upon Edric's regiment as they camped for the night, huddling around a fire to try and survive. Edric's group were all very religious, and they called out into the cold night in prayer, hoping that the light of the Burn would save them. Instead, Alaric found them. Alaric was a holy man to the pagan Highlanders, who worshipped animals and beasts as Gods. Alaric was a Gothi (spelled out in common Iron for sake of translation), but also a warrior. Much like Edric himself. Alaric was a Bear-Priest, or Bjorgothi, and worshipped the lost Bear-God of the Highland folk that represented storms, thunder and lightning.
The pagans took the Ironers by surprise, falling on them with unmatched ferocity and bloodlust. The better equipped knights fought back, bolstered by Edric and his calls, better than the pagans thought they would. The Highlanders were outnumbered too, and relies on the ambush during night to win the battle. But then, Alaric called upon his Storm-God and brought hell down onto the battlefield, lancing lightning through Edric's troops and smiting them down with the power of the storm. It is now believed that Alaric was a proto-soulomancer that uncovered the components to cast storm spells, believing it to be a connection to his God. Edric's men were massacred, and he alone stood. Just when Alaric was to kill Edric, a charge of knights from the main Iron force stamped through the smoking battlefield, running down the pagans and killing Alaric, who took many with him. They had seen the supernatural storm and come to save Edric.
Heartbroken, Edric looked at the massacred men around him. A couple hundred knights and squires in total. According to the story, others saw the storm conjured by Alaric form into a humanoid around the crying Edric and give him an item. Others believe that Edric had obtained this item much earlier. Edric held the Sanitem Lapis, a Priscillan Artifact of immeasurable value that deteriorated The saved men saw themselves as reborn, sons of Edric completely. They started House Edricson in his name, and continued his teachings. During the re-settling of the Thunder Flats, they settled in Roeswerp and grew in size from there.
