Seelie - Language

The Seelie tongue is the ancestral language of the people of the same name, native to the lush grasslands of the far eastern [PLACEHOLDER] sub-region of the Achaean continent. It is one of the oldest languages and has gone through very little transformations throughout the centuries.   Characteristics
Seelie is a very distinctive language of contradiction that often sounds exotic and foreign to non-natives and stands out easily. This is due to the fact that it mixes sharp, jagged phonetics and vocabulary with a surprisingly melodic phrase structure. It is a very difficult language for outsiders to master because intonation and speed have an impact on the meaning of the words themselves and while one may learn the words and rules of syntax, it takes tremendous experience to fully get a grasp on - and replicate - the explicit and implicit connotations carried by tone.   Use and Spread
Although it is not the most commonly spoken language in the Seilurid Empire - that distinction goes to Francien - it is the language of the conquerors at the heart of the Empire and is therefore deemed the language of law and nobility. All legal jurisprudence and scientific papers are published in Seelie first and foremost, and while most documents of public interest are translated to Francien, a mastery of Seelie is required to dive deep into the higher spheres of Imperial society. It is most common in the Terres Célestes, Prés d'Or (Est and Ouets) and Col des Titans provinces, but less so in the other provinces that are not ancestrally Seelie. When dealing with foreign dignitaries, Francien is often used instead, which gives the Seelie language a further air of mystique, as even foreign diplomats who routinely deal with the Empire may not be able to pierce the secrets of their aristocracy's formal tongue, or that of their private libraries.
