Usul

Lady of the Wilds, Daughter of the Spring, Spritemother

Goddess of the Feywild and patron deity to the Spritefolk. Usul is an unpredictable goddess, whose whims take her through flights of fancy that verge on the unbelievable. Her domains include the summer, dreams, trickery, forests and fey. The sprites revere her as Mother, as they were created to be her people, and as a result they aid her in guarding the main entrance to the Feywild from any who would seek to do harm there.   She is the reincarnated daughter of Hadryn and Falspar, brought back from her stillbirth as part of a deal made by her mother with the Allmother Seiren. She appears as a young girl of roughly 8, always barefoot and wearing a rough gown spun from leaves and flowers. Wanderers in the Wilds may catch a glimpse of Usul as she capers through the forests with her fey friends - she rarely appears directly and is often just a fleeting shadow disappearing into the trees.   Various fey creatures throughout the Wilds may be aspects of or servants to Usul - dryads and faeries in particular. Mortals who treat with these beings must follow their rules strictly, or risk punishments ranging from physical injury to simple pranks such as placing ones hat in a tree or painting strange shapes onto a sleepers face.

Divine Domains

The Feywild, summer, trickery, dreams, all fey creatures. Everything to do with the mortal race known as the Sprites falls under Usuls domain.

Personal history

Usul is the youngest of Vandriels deities, and to date the only child of a god to have ascended to true divinity.   Her mother was originally a mortal woman by the name of Hadryn, who was married to Psero and lived near the entrance to the Feywild. The pair were barren, but their love for one another transcended their need for a child and as such they were happy in each others company. However the mad god Falspar meddled, as he is prone to do, and he impregnated Hadryn with his demi-god child; this was Usul, but for whatever reason she was stillborn. Due to grief and shame, Hadryn committed suicide by leaping from the cliffs near her house - however upon her death, she was visited by the eldest of the gods, the Allmother Seiren. Seiren disapproved of Falspars actions, and for reasons that are her own offered the grieving mother a deal; Hadryn herself, her baby girl and her widowed husband could all be given divinity by Seiren, with power to oppose the god who had hurt them so very much should be attempt to do so again. But the tradeoff would be that none of the three could ever interact again without severe consequences.   Hadryn accepted, but she used her new-found powers of life and birth to give her daughter a gift before they were parted forever. Using the broken mortal bodies of her family, Hadryn channelled the powers from the nearby Feywilds and created the first Sprites - a magical race closely connected to the Feywild who could be the anchor for her divine daughter to use to remain grounded in the mortal realm.   Around the site of Usuls ascension, the ground erupted into deep forests and jungle terrain as a reflection of her new power. Despite only appearing as a child and only having lived for a matter of moments, Usul was still a goddess and as such had an instinctive control over her divinity - using it, she crafted a pocket dimension for her little population of Sprites and began to guide them in setting up their civilisation. It was her idea to allow travel between Hadrul and Vandariel via faerie circles and similar hidden entrances.
