Stifle

Abjurationists never cease to amaze me with the raw power of their spells. This one, as an example, allows them to snuff out the flame of a candle. You know, because normal people can't do that. (I really hope you sense my sarcasm).   Okay, that might be a little harsh. It's a fascinating spell that can evolve into something more powerful. It's one of the first spells that young abjurationists learn in their studies, and it takes a great deal of time to master. Though the effect of the spell is small, the concept behind it is quite tricky to master.

Effect

Essentially, stifle doesn't affect the flame itself. Rather, it hinders the chemical reaction between the fire and the wick so that eventually the flame flickers out. Of course this works on more than just candles, but it requires a lot of concentration and skill to quell larger fires.

Side/Secondary Effects

If the caster fails, then the candle won't extinguish! Oh no!

Different fires are caused by different chemical reactions, so each different reaction requires a slightly different twist in the spell or it won't work. Sages who have a lot of experience can adapt quickly to such changes, but there are many who can't progress that far.
