The Sky Squadron
In the Unsteady Wars, there was a group called the Sky Squadron. Formed exclusively of elite flying creatures, this strike and retreat group were fearocious, proud, and noble. Mainly a non-confrontational group, most of their battles were over stolen food or gear.
They were also sometimes mercenaries, though the current leader often declined offers based on whether or not there were a lot of warriors active.
The Sky Squadron was started as a flight club before the First King left. They recluded slightly who the humans became more cruel, but they continued to foster a love of the sky. They also reached out more to the winged beasts during this period that were being oppressed because of their ability.
After the Unsteady Wars ended, they faded, and the stories about them faded as well. Now that the Wars had ended, the battles were mostly tiffs about territory, and help wasn’t needed as desperately, and the raiders weren’t as desperate either.
During one of the most dangerous aerial wars during the Unsteady Wars, called the Blueborn War, the leader of the Sky Squadron was named Laurel Bloodwing, or the Skyqueen, as her enemies knew her.
The other side of the Blueborn War were the Tekamine, a group of tiny machinists who first created versatile flying machines, then started raiding nearby villages for treasure.
The Sky Squadron came out victorious in the end, but not before Laurel was blinded and broke her leg.
After the wars ended and the legends faded, a new group of elite flyers rose and did the same kind of work the Squadron had done.
They called themselves “The Skyqueen Strikers.” Coincidence? I think not!
