Magic in Valmautéra

Free Magic

Magic flows across Valmautéra in eddies and currents, stronger around sites of power and weaker in areas devoid of life. It is a natural and powerful force, difficult to master and almost impossible to contain. Magic users on Valmautéra shape and direct this flow of magic (referred to as The Volei [Vól-ey]) to create, manipulate or destroy matter and elemental forces. Sorcerers have a natural, innate connection to the flow of magic through the world enabling them to exert their influence on it. Wizards study natural magic, learning words of power and ritualistic practices that can influence the flow of magical forces through their arcane focus - an item with a strong connection to the Volei.

Though there are many schools of magic on Valmautéra, all of them are ultimately connected to the Volei.

Divine Magic

Valmautéra is a world without deities and its people have never known or worshipped a pantheon. Some groups, settlements or small societies may have formed their own religions, which may even be centered around some beings of great power (Mortal, Fiend, Fey, Elemental or other). Some may have posed as true deities to their followers. However, all draw their power from and were born from the Volei and have no more a hand in the creation and fundamental destiny of the world than any other being.
Clerics specialising in a domain (for example Life, Death, Knowledge, War etc.) draw on and shape the Volei like any other magic user, applying their skills to and honing the practice of more focused applications of the primeval magical force. Similarly, Paladins draw upon and direct the raw flow of magic through their arcane focus.

Natural Magic

Magic users particularly attuned to plants and living beings are sensitive to the influence of the Volei in nature. Druids, Nature clerics and similar magic users are able to manipulate the natural world - and even the natural cycle of life and death - through the flow of free magic.

Pact Magic

Magical beings take many forms in the world of Valmautéra. However, Fey and Fiends alike are all manifestations of the forces of the Volei - whatever power these beings may grant through pacts with mortals. The great old ones - otherworldly aberrations - have the ability to influence the flow of magic on the plane, enabling them to act on the plane from the void between worlds.
