The Legend of Dragmas

Long ago, not long enough for legends to fade but long enough for no living being to remember the mortals of Valakurth lived under the tyrannical rule of Dragons both metallic and chromatic. Despite their differences they could come to agreement; that the small folk were nothing but pawns whose highest purpose in life would be as slaves to higher beings such as Dragons. Often having agreements of separation of land to prevent petty squabble amongst themselves. Depending on a Dragon’s power they may have acted as emperors or kings over regions while their brood would often act as lords, and dukes across their lands. They would often demand sacrifices as a show of fealty. Crimes committed against dragonkind were met with swift and immediate corporal punishment.   After a millennia of servitude the tall folk began their war against Dragons. Years of warring and no side showed any sign of slowing on either side, while the small folk were the majority of casualties. As the war raged on longer and longer starvation and poverty ran rampant. Once the winter began and food had run dry the tall folk would bring and offer food to the suffering and to help them through the times. Once word had spread of the prosperity the tall folk brought riots, rebellions, insurrection, and finally revolution began.   The small folk had officially turned on their slave masters after centuries of servitude. The war finally had its turning point. The dragon’s forces were being beaten and pushed from their roosts. On the final day of the war, with the dragon price slain a victory claimed. Upon that day, it was forever known as Dragmas. A celebration of freedom for all of the land. It became a time of community and helping as much needed rebuilding. The tall thanked the small for their help in the war. A feast was had and bound they became in friendship and brotherhood. To be there for each through thick and thin.   To celebrate the season towns would start their celebration by decorating the town. In the town square would include the bones of the largest dragon locally slain. Boned wrapped up an tied to a large pole. Colourful glass pieces would be attached all around. With light spell cast in certain places to make it glow colours. Holly, mistletoe and anything green that could survive the winter would be hung up on households. Wreaths would be decorated to honour those that fell during the war both tall or small.   Since then became tradition to remember the past. The week before Dragmas all were too fast. To help each other through the week without want for compensation. Often helping fix buildings, provide warmth the the homeless, or anything else to help either the community or individual. Even if only for the season everyone acted most selfless. As the fast ended on Dragmas itself, the feast became more like a New Years toast. The people would have their feast at midnight with much food and much drink. The tall would return to towns and celebrate with the small.   As the years past and people needed less and less community help, to keep the tradition living gift giving evolved. Not everywhere evolved the same but most ended up using a similar system. Everyone would be given the name of another, as well as two children. They were to provide a gift for each deposited with the tall. On Dragmas morn the All-Father would arrive with sleighs all large and handout gifts to those they were destined too with the assistance of his 'gremlins'. All-Father would be the eldest tall folk dressed from head to toe in tunic, with white trimmings, black boots and belt.
