The Red Fields Duel, Suvto Va, Boutom, 17th, 2978
The Duel in the Fields of Red was a duel that was fought between Kaitu Man of the Kingdom of Tunakat and Santu Kai of the Lordship of Saikuto. It was fought on the Fields of Red, a major region for growing Emtian Red. It started when Kaitu had a raiding party burn a farm in Saikuto and steal its goods. The duel was unique among the many duels that marked the time, Santu Kai threw Emtian Red at his opponent to blind him. An excerpt of a recount from that time, The Duels of Men, reads as so:
'The two approached each other, face-to-face, both speaking the sacred vows of a duel,
"I fight until death, I fight for my life, I fight against the other to solve my strife. By my bow, by my kingdom, by my lord, I fight with their power, I fight with my sword"
They backed up from each other, about 30 feet apart, and started fighting. Kaitu charged, as what was traditional by that time; but Santu stood holding five, small, red, berries. Emtian Red. Kaitu was but five feet away when Santu took those berries and threw them at Kaitu's eyes. Kaitu was blinded, and Santu stabbed him through the heart into the ground. Santu was the winner.'
This excerpt shows that the Red Kingdoms Era as it has become romanticized throughout the literature of today is not very far off from reality. The aftermath of this duel was minor. Santu Kai, being a minor lord was able to absorb the lands of Kaitu Man into his only slightly-larger kingdom. Eventually, however, the Lordship of Saikuto was absorbed into the major Kingdom of Emkai.
