The goblins had no word for the world. They had a word for forest and jungle and treetops and swamp and ocean and mountain and cavern and field and sky and deep-under-earth, but no word that meant all of these things. When the Great Change happened, and their homelands were ripped apart and their travel-paths were changed or gone, they listened to the other peoples to try to understand what had happened.   First they went to the elves, whom they'd long known and often hated, because elves were familiar. Elves would not speak to goblins, but goblins were sneaky and found elves speaking among themselves: Uralia has been hurt, they said; her mana is bleeding.   Then they discovered the humans, the newcomers, who wandered lost throughout the plains and forests, wailing for their lost cities and boats and war-machines: Lampaan has abandoned us, they said; our home is gone.   Finally they noticed the dwarves, who were more hidden and not panicking as the other peoples were, deep in their caverns and starting to spill out onto the grasslands and reaching out to the sea: Thornfad has changed, they said; our treasures are lost.   When goblins traveled back to their own tribes and carried these stories, when they described what all these other peoples said was happening, they discovered they needed a word, something that wasn't just "everywhere" or "all," but encompassed the trees and clouds and the ground and waters and all that grew in and among them. Those who had visited the elves said the word for that was "Uralia," and it was damaged. Those who visited the humans said the word was "Lampaan," and it was corrupt. Those who visited the dwarves said the word was "Thornfad," and it was transformed.   The goblins met and danced and smoked and fought, and talked about Uralia-Lampaan-Thornfad until it became UrLaTh in their meetings, and then when they went out to the other peoples, they used that word to mean this new world, that had the walking trees of Uralia and the red sunsets of Lampaan and the sparkling ores of Thornfad, but not in the same places nor as many as before. And although few welcomed the goblins, they had a world that meant this world, not the one that was lost, and so that word spread, and grew, until all the peoples, in many languages, called the world "Urlath," and never knew it had started with goblins.
