Gargant

Gargants are colossal herbivores native to Ur'En. They reach staggering sizes, growing as large as hills. They are occasionally domesticated but this is an unreliable and potentially disastrous endeavor.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gargants have unusual biology. Gargant flesh appears to be very earthen. They are not elementals yet seem to incorporate soil, rocks, and mud into their flesh. Boulders and other hard material often protrude like bony spikes.

A gargant is enormous. Their size ranges from a small house to the size of entire castles and legends say even larger ones exist. Gargants have 4 limbs that function as legs, with the front two able to work like hands. Gargants are knuckle-walkers and use their powerful forelimbs to uproot entire trees. Their heads are adorned with antler-like crests, with variable shapes.

Genetics and Reproduction

Gargants only mate about once a decade. They will lay eggs, which can be the size of a house, and then bury them in the ground. The eggs incubation time seems to vary widely. The shortest recorded is 2 years, while there are legends of towns being settled atop the site, only a generation later to discover the folly of their parents as a baby gargant emerges to wreak havoc.

Ecology and Habitats

Gargants are found all over Ur'En but tend to cluster near woodlands.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Gargants are herbivores but unlike most others, they are able to consume wood fibers. Their diet consists almost entirely of trees. Fortunatly for the woodland habitats, gargants have exceptionally slow metabolisms and only require one or two trees a week.

Additional Information

Domestication

The opportunity to utilize these giants as beasts of both burden and war has proved too alluring to resist for some. Adult gargants are beyond this but sometimes young can be taught to tolerate handlers. A gargant trained for construction can do the work of an army in a day, while one trained for battle can do the work of an army in seconds.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Gargants rely on their sight, although their vision appears to be somewhat poor. Gargants have external ears allowing them to hear relatively well.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

An unusual side-effect of their earthenbodies is that they typically host their own terreriums on their bodies. Mosses, grass and even trees can grow on their skin. This can provide emergency rations for a gargant in times of famine but it also means that other woodland creatures end up calling the behemoth home.
