Bug-speak

Bug-Speak is the derisive term for the pidgen language (https://www.yourdictionary.com/pidgin) used by the Chult to communicate with outsiders. Chult communicate with each other through a natural telepathy. They can speak to non-chult in this way as well, but the mental dialogue is mostly a blur of images, smells and sensations that are difficult to interpret. Because of this, Chult have developed a crude spoken language to facilitate trade and conversation. Bug-speak is useful for typical day-to-day usage but breaks down for  heavily technical concepts. Bug-Speak is described as sounding elegant and poetic, with a certain rhythmic cadence.

Bug-Speak is also used to refer to the written language of the Chult. The written from is a surprisingly sophisticated script of hieroglyphs, usually written on leaf-paper. Chult keep records of important events, catalog trade and even partake in recreational writing. Despite this proclivity for documenting, Chult records are notorious for embellishment, revisionism and outright fabrication. Chult often feel compelled to make their writing "more interesting," which can mean anything from a  mostly accurate rose-tinted retelling of a personal story to spinning outlandish tales to fill gaps in an account.
