Elemental Magic

Elemental magic is the most common type of magic, and the kind that most people think of when magic is mentioned. Not only are all members of three native races able to use this type of magic, but so are many types of animals. The ability to use elemental magic is genetic. The strength of one's magic is partly genetic, and partly training. This magic is derived from the elemental energies of the nine elemental domains, and the uses elemental magic has depends on the element it is associated with.

Elemental Energy

Elemental energy is the source of elemental magic, and was created by the gods at the same time as when the first life was created. As the source of elemental magic is tied to a specific location, the further one goes from the domain their type of magic comes from, the weaker their magic. The energy of each domain is different, each one being the source of an element.   When a magic-capable person/animal is born, they are attuned to the element of their homeland. The element they are attuned to is very rarely changed, but it can if they spend enough time in another domain. Those who spend a lot of time in multiple worlds can be attuned to multiple elements, but their magic ability will be weak in both.

Elements

There are 9 elements total, one for each domain. They can be split into three groups of three elements. The abilities of the elemental magics within these groups have lots of similarities in how they are used.

Tangible Elements

The tangible elements are those native to the surface of Unis; Earth, Water, and Air. The use of these elements allows one to manipulate not only earth, water, and air, but all inorganic solids, liquids, and gases respectively. Users of these elements cannot create their elements, but can only detect and manipulate them. These elements are incredibly useful in combat, being able to physically damage opponents. However, they can be worked around by fighting in terrain that has very little or none of their element.

Energetic Elements

The energetic elements are those native to the tunnels and caverns beneath Unis; Light, Sound, and Electromagnetism. The use of these elements allows one to generate and manipulate their element. While lacking the raw power of the tangible or celestial elements, they are incredibly versatile in their uses. In the hands of a skilled user, they can be just as or even more effective.

Celestial Elements

The celestial elements are those native to the islands above Unis; Illusion, Probability, and Psion. While these elements have no visible effect on the physical world (with the exception of psion, though telekinesis is weak compared to the tangible elemental magics), they are still quite powerful in their own right. Rather, these elements have more psychological effects or affect the world in subtle ways.

Counters

While it is the most common magic, it is also the easiest to counter and block. It is the only type of magic that can easily be manipulated by outside sources. The most common way to do this it to use Nullium or Antimagite; two materials from the Inter-Realm Zone. Nullium is able to absorb huge amounts of elemental energy, and if a mage is restrained using it, they will be unable to use elemental magic. Antimagite, on the other hand, repels elemental energy. With these two materials, equipment can be made specifically to counter elemental mages.
