Umbral

Geography

Umbral is a peninsula attached to an otherwise inhospitable continent that's situated over one of the planet's magnetic poles. (The Antarctic Peninsula, attached to Antarctica, is a good real-life parallel.) The environment is a tundra. Most of the characteristics of Earth's arctic and antarctic tundras also apply to Umbral.   The most relevant feature are the auroras that regularly appear in the sky. The auroras are considered to be the work of evil, deceptive spirits who wish to sow madness and confusion among the people. By sacred law, people are forbidden from watching them, though living in the arctic, it is nearly impossible for people to not catch glimpses of them on a regular basis. This is particularly true on moonless nights and during Nightreign (the arctic winter when there is no sunlight).   To date, the clearest and most spectacular auroras occur on moonless nights during Nightreign. The Order of the Eye calls them "Great Auroras".

Fauna & Flora

The most important species of flora are marine algae that blooms during the Bright (the arctic summer when the sun never sets). A large amount and variety of marine life migrates to Umbral to feed on the algae -- shrimps, small fish, and even huge whales. With these species come the predators who feed on them. Humans eat the shrimps, whales, and most fish.   Geothermal springs further inland support flowering herbs and shrubs that have edible berries and medicinal bark. Edible and medicinal mushrooms flourish in mountain caves. There are various species of lichen can be mashed and fried into flat cakes -- a staple of the Umbralan diet.   Umbral's permanent population of wild fauna consists of medium to small sized mammals and birds. The largest are foxes and penguins. Blind fish and amphibians are found in caves.
